Featured Font!
by Tina Chambers
The featured font for October is called "A Charming Font".
It can be found by following this link http://www.dafont.com/en/theme.php?cat=801
to my favorite font site, Dafont.
A Charming Font is based on the opening credits of the WB Show,
Charmed. It seems only too fitting for great Halloween layouts.
Here you will see a layout that I did with pictures from DTM Margie
of her son, Josh, last Halloween. Now, lets see some charming Halloween
layouts using A Charming Font! Hope you enjoy!

Byte-Ideas
HOSTED by Shannon Miklo
Note: the November
Sketch can be found here... submit entries to "byte.ideas@scrapbook-bytes.com"
|
 |
Each month, the Design Team puts out a sketch and
the members at Scrapbook-Bytes create an original,
creative layout following the design of that sketch.
At the end of the month, the Design Team votes for
three winners to be featured here! This month's
sketch belongs to Design Team Member Valerie Vaughn
(withunmind).
The competition
was steep and votes were extremely close!
All the participants did a fantastic job and we'd
like to give all of you a huge pat on the back!!!
Thank you to all who submitted a layout! |

"Baby Love" by Lauri Nowling
(SN: Laurie9585)
PROGRAM: Adobe
Photoshop 7.0
FONTS: Texas
Hero
TECHNIQUES:
This layout was based on a print Laurie
found at
http://www.art.com called
Happy Heart I by
Anna Flores. She saved
a copy of the print to her hard drive
and opened it in a separate window in
Adobe Photoshop and pulled the colors
for her layout right from the print.
Laurie states that she gets so many of
her design and color ideas off from artwork.
The heart blocks and the side journaling
block were all created separately using
brushes she downloaded from http://www.anotherbrushresource.com.
The journaling is a quote Laurie got
from the soup at
http://www.twopeasinabucket.com. It
reads: We are each of us angels
with only one wing and we fly by embracing
each other.
Thanks to Shellyrae for the torn black
mesh! |

"Dirt Tracks and Telephone Poles"
by Joyce Booth
(SN:
Joyce)
PROGRAM: Paint Shop
Pro 8
FONTS: Bradley
Hand, Pepita, and Century Gothic
TECHNIQUES:
The track surface and scenic stationary
were created from scratch in PSP 8. Joyce
flood filled the background with black
and used the selection tool to draw narrow
sections for the line and flood filled
with white and yellow. She used a stencil
font for the numbers, then applied a texture.
The stationary was a simple rectangle
flood filled with yellow. She then layered
a telephone pole photo on top and lowered
the opacity. Next, she used a custom
brush she had created from scratch and
erased the left side of the photo.
Journaling reads:
Dirt Tracks and Telephone Poles:
It was your freshmen year of high school
and your goal was to train hard and qualify
for the Drake Relays. The one track and
field meet that every serious high school
track athlete in the state dreams of competing
in. All classes all are eligible. Small
rural 1A schools compete against large,
big city 3A schools. You trained relentlessly
that whole school year. That's what it
took. You are a distance runner. Mile
after mile. Heat, rain, snow and cold
did not deter you. Training twice a day.
Telephone poles were your distance training
markers. You lived too far out of town
to train on the school's dirt track. Your
school is one of the smallest rural 1A
schools in the state. That spring you
won race after race, the distance triple
crown, 3000, 1500 and 800 meters, at every
meet. You did it! You ran a qualifying
time on a dirt track. That's where you
compete. May 1, 2000, Drake Relays. You
are nervous. You are the girl from nowhere.
The one no one has heard of before. You
are the underdog. You vow to do your best.
It's a privilege just to qualify. You
have met your goal. Bang! The gun goes
off and you find yourself running with
23 of the states best distance runners.
Tick, tick, the seconds on the clock are
flying by. 400 meters and the runners
are packed together. Tick, tick, 800 meters
and there are breakaway groups. Tick,
tick, 1600 meters and you are towards
the back of the lead pack running in 8th
place. TIck, tick, 2400 meters and you
are holding at 8th place. Tick, tick,
there are 200 meters left. Everyone else
is tiring, but you are still strong and
have a kick. You say to hell with it.
It's all or nothing. The stadium is going
crazy. Everyone is yelling and clapping,
but you don't hear them. You are concentrating
on the finish line. It's over. You placed
third. Everyone is still yelling, cheering
and whistling. Not for the winner, but
for you. With 200 meters left you poured
everything you had into your kick and
stunned everyone by moving from 8th to
3rd place. You were 3/4ths of a second
from taking 2nd place. Your time: 10:13.55.
Two teenage boys sitting, behind your
mom in the stadium, summed up what everyone
else was saying. "Oh, my God! Did
you see that chick? Who is she? She was
awesome!"
She's the
girl that runs on dirt tracks and trains
with telephone poles. |

"At the Waterhole" by Meryl
Bartho
(SN:
Meryl)
PROGRAM: Adobe
Photoshop 6
FONTS: Mariah
for the title and JanieHmk and Jot for
the journaling.
TECHNIQUES:
The diamond shaped elements are copied
from the giraffe skin, with a bevel, as
are the thongs which are used to "hang"
them from the branch (this was from a
photo, extracted). The photo was copied
3 times, two used as backgrounds. The
rings, also used as "brads"
are from a bar of Meryl's husband's soap,
photographed and extracted.
Journaling reads: Whilst visiting
Kruger we came across this giraffe drinking
from Roodewal water hole. He perfectly
mirrored the emblem on the signpost, but
before we could get the camera ready he'd
changed his pose. Luckily, when we returned
to camp, we found that Rob and Caryn had
captured the moment perfectly, whilst
we had the sign - one of the joys of being
in such a great group! Thanks Rob &
Caryn!

NEW SITE CHALLENGE!!!!

THIRD BYTES A CHARM!
HOSTED by Margie Lundy (scrapster)
Because sometimes it’s better to receive than
to give!
Would you like to be charmed? Then send us your photos and if they’re
chosen, three of our design team members will scrap them for you!
See the official rules below. Have you wondered what someone else
would do with your photos? Ever had the perfect photo, but no idea
to go along with it? Are you curious about how many options there
are for scrapping your favorite memory? How about having gifts for
your three aunts in the photos? Whatever your reason, we hope you’ll
enjoy Third Byte’s a Charm.
This month’s charmed scrapper is Donella Radabaugh! Donella’s
photos were taken at Vance’s Run in West Virginia, USA as
her husband shared his fly fishing spot with the family. Scrapbook-Bytes
Design Team Members Jenna, Margie, and Tina scrapped Donella’s
photos with their own individual styles.

Created in Jasc Paint Shop Pro
Background by Maya at http://www.scrapbookgraphics.com

Fiber by Shannon
Fonts: PC Airplane and 2Peas Chestnuts
by Tina Chambers
Created in Microsoft Digital Image Pro
Fonts: Castellar, Edwardian Script ITC, Century Gothic
Tina loves the movie A River Runs Through It, so this quote automatically
popped into mind at the mention of fly fishing. Since the quote
said "All things merge into one" that’s how Tina
did the page. She merged all of three photos into one by pulling
the soften edge bar all the way to 100%.

by Margie Lundy
Created in Adobe Photoshop
Fonts: Garamond, CheltPress Trial, Serefina, and CrayonL
Thanks to Donella for sharing these beautiful photos!
She’ll be receiving the high-resolution print quality files
as well. We’d love to hear your feedback on this section at
photos@scrapbook-bytes.com.
And if you’d like to submit your photos, we’d love to
see them. Just read the rules below and good luck!
Official Rules:
Send us 1-3 photos of the same subject at 72 dpi and under 100k.
If yours are chosen, you will be asked to send higher quality files
later. Include your name, email, and a brief description of the
photos. Email your entries by October 15th, to
photos@scrapbook-bytes.com.
Sorry, but entries that do not meet these requirements cannot be
considered. Please, only one entry per person. Photos will be chosen
based on quality, content, and meaning. If your photos are not chosen,
you may resubmit them the following month if you wish or submit
different ones.
Good luck to all! And we hope you enjoy Third Byte’s a Charm!
We think all three bytes will be charms!
Hot Bytes
What’s HOT in scrapping!
By and © April Anderton

Trends come and go so quickly it’s hard to keep up. Here
are just a few things that have been popping up on paper and GC
layouts alike.
Computer Generated Layouts (Digital Scrapbooking)
If you are talking about what’ hot in scrapbooking in general,
there is no question that digital layouts are finally making it
into the spotlight. Just the mere fact that you do your layouts
on the computer makes YOU HOT!! Of course, if you are a subscriber
to this e-zine you already know that! How great is it to finally
see the talent and artistic genius of digital scrappers among the
traditional paper layouts in the leading magazines? Digital scrapbooking
is making its way to the forefront of a multi-million dollar industry.
Just check out the SBB forum on who’s being published and
you’ll see that digital scrapbooking is on its way! Be one
of the ones to pave the way! SUBMIT your computer generated layouts!
TAG! You’re IT!
Is it just me, or have tags taken over?? The tag has evolved from
a creative way to add some journaling to an art form in and of itself.
Tags have been around in the scrapping world for a long long time,
but lately we’ve seen funky tassels, paper piecing, mini cities
and oceans right on a little bitty scrap of ‘paper’.
We have some great examples of these tags right in our own elements
section. Just look at what’s out there! Try making your own
fabulous tag! (3 crackle tags below made by Maya- 4 Seasons tags
made by Shelley Rae – all available in the elements
section of SBB.)

JOURNALING
Journaling has always been a big part of scrapbooking, but for
a while now it has been popular to let the photos speak for themselves.
While this can be very effective in creating various moods and incredible
layouts, journaling is important too! It seems quite a few cg scrappers
have taken to writing! Pages with just as much journaling as photo
have been popping up all over the gallery! Take a look at a couple
of examples: (left page by Margie (Scrapster) - middle page by Shelleyrae
- right page, Valerie(withunmind). You can see the full versions
of these layouts in the design
team gallery.

WHAT’S NOT:
Remember that even elements that are HOT right now can quickly
become cliché if overused, so keep your own personal style
shining bright while applying these and other techniques.
Of course, the real judge of what’s hot in scrapping is what’s
happening on YOUR layouts, so get to it!
You Know You’ve Been Byten’
When
By and © Kristie Wickland
People reach down and try to touch the elements on your page.
You read “What’s Hot” in the September newsletter
and wonder if you should have a 3rd baby…just didn’t
take enough feet pictures with the first two! Don’t tell my
husband! (Rachael)
When you wait for the September issue of Tid-Bytes (checking your
email every 5 minutes because someone said it would be sent out
tonight) until 1:30am then stay up until 3am reading it! (Sandi)
You realize you can order dinner online and never leave the comfort
of your chair, so that you can keep on scrapping.
You stand at your mailbox for days to get Maya’s CD!
When you stay up till 3 am to finish a project and swore that you'd
go to bed at 1. Who knew time could pass so quickly? ;)
Your kids school projects have a very familar ring to them -- hint:
they look like moms scrapbook layouts!
You've really been byten' when you find yourself driving right
past those craft stores without a thought even entering your head
that you should stop and paruse the scrapbook isles.
Your pet has it's own online photo album and scrapbook.
You keep a notebook by your bedside just incase you come up with
anything in the middle of the night -- dreams really CAN come true!
Thanks to all of you that submitted, please send future submissions
to Kristie@scrapbook-bytes.com
for consideration in future issues. Be sure to include "You
Knew You'd Been Byten When" in the subject line.. Thanks!
Featured Software - Review and Samples
By Marcee Duggar
Received my cd in the mail today and couldn’t wait to get
it loaded onto my computer. As most of you Computer
Scrapers know there is nothing like having new software to explore,
it is kind of like Christmas morning when you were a kid. With the
exception that the best presents do not come in the biggest packages!
When opening the cd you will automatically be brought to the contents
page. At the bottom of this page is a list of different locations
on the cd. The first is the Welcome link and I would suggest that
you visit there first. It contains allot of information about the
cd and also instructions on how to navigate through the program
to find exactly what you are looking for easily.
Now on to the fun part exploring what exactly is included in your
software. On the contents page you will see three sections the first
is Backgrounds.
All members receive a discount on the purchase of this CD as well!
Note: A more detailed review is available in the October
2003 issue of Tid-Bytes as well as exclusive never-before seen layouts
created by the Design Team!
You can view more layouts created with the Digital
Illusions CD here
in the Gallery!
