HOT BYTES

What's HOT in computer scrapping!
By April Anderton

Trends come and go so quickly it's hard to keep up. Here are just a few things that have been popping up on paper and computer generated layouts alike.

Picture Strips

This is an excellent way to get more photos on your page and still keep the design clean and uncluttered.   You can mat them or use a negative strip or just line them all up along one edge. However you choose to do it, it creates an effect of continuity.

Beautiful Brides

It's June… WEDDING MONTH!   No matter what month of the year, brides will always be a staple in scrapbooking. It's the most important day right? Check out these beauties and if you haven't scrapped your own wedding, get to it!!

Measuring instruments

Since we are documenting time, growth, direction etc. it only makes sense that we will use elements to support these ideas and themes. The following layouts are examples of great use of measuring/navigation devices to convey a feeling of passing time or sense of direction.

WHAT'S NOT:

You all know it by now…NOT SCRAPPING is NOT HOT!! SO GET BUSY!

Remember that even elements that are HOT right now can quickly become cliché if overused, so keep your own personal style shining bright while applying these and other techniques.

Of course, the real judge of what's hot in scrapping is what's happening on YOUR layouts, so get to it!

The competition was steep and votes were extremely close!  All the participants did a fantastic job and we'd like to give all of you a huge pat on the back!!!  Thank you to all who submitted a layout!

The winners will receive a voucher to use at our new online store worth the price of an EZine! Congratulations!

Title of Layout: Fire Girl
Your Name: Alisa Jackson
SBB Screen Name: alisatj
Program Used: Photoshop CS
Fonts Used: 2peas gift on 'FIRE' and Zachary on the rest Techniques and Credits: Since the photos were so busy and colorful I decided to stick with a single color scheme for the layout. I placed the word 'fire' in different positions on the white block to imitate a transparency look. I put a vellum texture on the background. I also had so many photos I wanted to use that I placed two small shots on the strip across the bottom of the sketch. The journaling reads:

Annie enjoyed her time at the fire station’s open house. She got to explore the fire engines, wear a fire hat, and eat free snacks! What more could a fire girl ask for?

Title of Layout: Upside Down
Your Name: Cherie Mask
SBB Screen Name: chezshee
Program Used: PS 7 Fonts Used: times and times again, malermeister, elegant
Techniques and Credits:
Photos altered with desaturation and color balance filters. Applied texture, and color overlays to photos and velum.
Brushes on background from Lilith. Cotton twill tape border from Ronna at SBB. Nail elements by me. Title from a song by Daniel Taylor. And of course the cool sketch from April Anderton.

Title of Layout: You are my Sunshine
Your Name: Dawn
SBB Screen Name: HuniBuni
Program Used: photoimpact 7
Fonts Used: Cathy
Techniques and Credits: for this one, we'd love in depth info on how you made certain elements or designs on your page (if unsure, refer to the Byte Ideas section in the newsletter for example

I created my own flower background and fabric textured then used the burn tool and a trasparent overlay to give it a more worn look.
I also created the flower paper and large flower element with the same techniques.

Other papers and Ribbon are from Gina's sunny disposition set color changed to yellow and burned and torn on the edges.

Old slide is Alison F.

Title of Layout: The Geese At Lions Lake
Your Name: Tracey Lee SBB
Screen Name: mommymonster
Program Used: Adobe Photoshop CS
Fonts Used: Mailbomb, Hemingway, and 1942 Report
Techniques and Credits: I wanted the background to look 'drybrushed', so I chose some grungy brushes (all from Truly-Sarah.com) and then, using the sketch as a guide, I 'stamped' the background using various brushes, until I was happy with the way that each block looked. Once I added the pictures, i roughed up the edges by 'stamping' the same brushes around the edges. I chose a grungy font, Mailbomb, for the title, and accented it with a script font, Hemingway. I used a grungy typewriter font (1942 Report) for the journaling.

It is very time consuming to email everyone, so they have opted to post all the scriptures in the scripture forum. Please check this forum every 2 weeks to get the next 3 scripture choices. Please make sure to post your layout under the SCRIPTURE GALLERY .   There is a special scripture gallery at the bottom of this section.

We were given permission from Kim (a member at 2 Peas, and the person who got the Scripture challenges started) to do this over here on our site. She was very helpful to us, and offered to help us in any way she could. Thank you so much Kim, we really appreciate it!

This will be very inspiring, I'm sure. We can't wait to see what you all do!

TRADING PAGES

Hosted by Valerie Vaughn

It's June and time for another round of Trading Pages! This is the time where players are paired off to scrap one another's pictures. For a comparison, everyone has also scrapped their own pictures!! Also, each designer has answered a few questions to give us a little “peek into their world”. Let's see what they have come up with!!

This month's players are Anna (username Mom2EllaRose) and Kristen (username kskold )

Here is Anna's creation with Kristen's pics.

1.Describe your usual style.
My usual style is graphic-y though I do try to switch things up now and again. As I learn more about Photoshop I do find myself doing more and more photo montages.

2. Does this layout differ from your usual style, if so, how?

I would say this is definitely my style, though I tried something new by adding a frame to the final layout.

3.How long did it take for you to complete this lo?
About 45 minutes. It would have taken me a little less had I not been chatting on the phone with a friend at the same time.

4. Describe the creative process that led you to put this lo together the way you did.
I was presented with 4 mismatched photos to my immediate reaction was a photomontage. I think it's the perfect way to incorporate such photos. The color scheme came from the blue in the subjects shirt, though the rest of the photos I turned to black and white. The background creates texture and was created by adding a radial and motion blur to one of the photos and layering it over a dark blue fill. I'm used to doing girl layouts and sensitive to the fact that young boys hate anything girly, so I went for a grungy teenage look that I thought he would like, drawing colors from the layout.

Brushes by Insomnia/Hybrid-Genesis.

Kristen's reaction to the layout that Anna created for her:
Oh, my! This really captures the complexity and layers of Patrick's personality. I love the wash of blue through it. Fascinating to see him gazing out at me from so many angles. Thank you!

Kristen's take on her own pics.

1. Describe your usual style.
My style is simple - bouncing back and forth between graphic-style and paper-style. I don't use a lot of elements of any sort. I tend to focus on one or two photos I really like and build a layout around them.

2. Did this lo differ from your usual style? If so, how?
This layout is a departure from my usual style. I decided to see what I could do that's between Anna's usual style and mine.

3. How long did it take for you to complete this layout?
All told over 3 nights, I spent 3-3.5 hours.

4. Describe the creative process that led you to put this layout together >the way you did.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the photos was that her dress was the same pink as the roses in my back yard. So, I took a couple of quick digital close-ups of the roses. Then, while I was considering how to approach this, I was also trying out a few tutorials at Adobe Studio and at myjanee.com. So, I ended up with the sketched version and the colored woodcut versions of the photos. I actually spent a lot more time trying to decide how to arrange all the pieces than I did manipulating the photos. I used a background I'd just made for the Elements list and started layering on the pieces, playing with transparency and masks. My first arrangement was symmetrical - which just didn't work. Once I moved the sketch to the upper left, I surrounded it with more roses and I'm much happier with this design.

Anna's reaction to Kristen's layout:
Firstly it made me smile because it's rare that someone else scraps my pictures and it's always lovely to view a different perspective on what I might have done. I love the pink and the flowers that she used which is so synonymous with my girly little Ella, and the circles - I don't nearly use those enough. I also love that dreamy effect which has left me wondering - How did she do that?
