HOT BYTES
What’s HOT in computer scrapping!
By and © April Anderton

Trends come and go so quickly it’s hard to keep up. Here are just a few things that have been popping up on paper and computer generated layouts alike.

Cool Covers
First impressions do matter! In the paper scrapping realm, covers are as much a part of the album as the photos or layouts they hold. Do we as computer scrappers take that little extra step that makes a great album a head-turner? Do our guests see our albums on our coffee tables and wonder what they are, or do they see brilliant covers that compel them to pick one up and delve into its pages? I have seen some great covers on paper scrapper’s albums lately. I am SURE we can come up with computer generated covers or title pages that can hold their own! Here are a couple examples we’ve seen in the gallery to inspire and challenge you! (click on the photos to be taken to the full size layouts in the gallery).

Stitching
I can’t imagine someone using their sewing machine on a piece of cardstock, but it sure creates a great look on a layout! This simple technique unifies a design and gives it a ‘homespun’ look. It is simple to recreate digitally. It can be a main element or theme of a layout or as in Sherekia’s denim layout below, it can be a quiet accent.

Snow (FUN SNOW!)
Flakes, banks or drifts, it seems snow has taken over the gallery! Maybe because it is winter or maybe because snow is just so darn FUN! (As I write this, it is -7 degrees so I am desperately trying to convince myself that snow is indeed FUN! Please bear with me as I repeat SNOW IS FUN!!) If you need any convincing, look at these FUN snow layouts! With FUN snow! And have FUN creating your own FUN snow pages.

WHAT’S NOT:

You all know it by now…NOT SCRAPPING is NOT HOT!! GET BUSY!

Remember that even elements that are HOT right now can quickly become cliché if overused, so keep your own personal style shining bright while applying these and other techniques.

Of course, the real judge of what’s hot in scrapping is what’s happening on YOUR layouts, so get to it!

February's sketch
by Gina Cabrera

Each month, the Design Team puts out a sketch and the members at Scrapbook-Bytes create an original, creative layout following the design of that sketch.  At the end of the month, the Design Team votes for three winners to be featured here!  This month's sketch belongs to Design Team Member Gina Cabrera.

The competition was steep and votes were extremely close!  All the participants did a fantastic job and we'd like to give all of you a huge pat on the back!!!  Thank you to all who submitted a layout!

The winners will receive a voucher to use at our new online store worth the price of an EZine! Congratulations!

Title of Layout: Looking for Fish
Your Name: Alisa Jackson
SBB Screen Name: AlisaTJ
Program Used: PhotoShop 7
Fonts Used: Lainie Day and Century Gothic
Techniques and Credits: These are photos I took of my mother and daughter looking into a pond for fish. I
used the main picture as the background. I lowered
the opacity of it to 75% and applied a slight gaussian
blur.

The journaling reads:
While we were in Scottsdale, Grandma took Rachel and Annie on a long walk every day. They walked through the beautiful grounds of the Princess Resort. They stopped to look at fountains, flowers, statues, ponds, and fish. When they threw bread crumbs into the pond, the fish would hungrily come to the surface to get a bite to eat. But on this day, since they didnt have any crumbs,
there were no fish to be seen.

But that's okay. It was still worth the walk

Title of Layout: We Moved!
Your Name: Emma Powell
SBB Screen Name: thepals
Program Used: PS CS
Fonts Used: Marita, Dave's Krappy Handwriting, Arial

Techniques and Credits: all elements made by me
Inspiration for layout from ScrapDiva The sketch reminded me of this layout, with the wavy lines looking like postage cancellation or writing on a postcard. I
wanted to bump up the realism and create my own version.

Elements details:
-torn envelope using myjanee.com torn paper tutorial, with a lot
of added custom shading and gradients to get creases and two layers of
torn paper, pattern overlay
-paper clip used EyeCandy chrome filter and plastic is black
shapes with gradients for shine and curves
-address forwarding label has layer masks over text and smudges
to make them appear stamped on, same technique for address on envelope,
Happy Holidays postmark cancellation stamp, and SOLD stamp
-barcode uses vertical dash with two different font sizes to get
tall and short bars
-post it note has perspective transformation and shear filter to
bend with custom shading added
-notebook paper has skew transformation to get tearing, pattern
overlay
-stamp image from USPS.com (current even stamp to show what was
happening at the time of our move)
-postmark (cancellation circle) made in Illustrator CS with mask
added in PS to get stamped look
-wood for desk from imageafter.com

I used and actual torn envelope with yellow forwarding sticker and
holiday cancellation to make my own digital one (my husband told me to
scan it, but that's no fun!) I also used actual torn spiral notepaper,
lined post it note, and black plastic paper clip to look at to make
things as real as I could.

Our new house looks a lot like our old house from the front! But it's
twice the size, our old house on steroids :) This layout was a lot of
fun to make, took about 2 days, many hours. I overlaid Gina's sketch on
low opacity to get the best match I could in size and angle, etc.

Title of Layout: Little Boy Blue
Your Name: Tina Chambers
SBB Screen Name: TinaMom2Tate
Program Used: DIP
Fonts Used: 2ps think small and 2ps Rickety
Techniques and Credits: I just took the idea from how unhappy my nephew was the day I tried to do a photo shoot for his 1st birthday. I colored the layout blue to follow that theme further. I faded the large pic into the blue. I framed my title in blue and framed the small pictures in white.

Third Byte’s a Charm
Hosted by Marcee Duggar

Because sometimes it’s better to receive than to give!

Would you like to be charmed? Then send us your photos and if they’re chosen, three of our design team members will scrap them for you! See the official rules below. Have you wondered what someone else would do with your photos? Ever had the perfect photo, but no idea to go along with it? Are you curious about how many options there are for scrapping your favorite memory? How about having gifts for your three aunts in the photos? Whatever your reason, we hope you’ll enjoy Third Byte’s a Charm.

This month’s charmed scrapper is Amy Wilson! Amy’s beautiful photos are of the first snow of the season in her wonderful backyard in Woodbridge, Virginia. Scrapbook-Bytes Design Team Members Jenna, Jenn, and Tina scrapped Amy's photos with their own individual styles.
