Angry Newbie - help needed

I am so new, I'm learning how to spell photography and scrapbook!!

I have committed to creating a directory for my 40th class reunion in Oct., have scanned the pic's in the yearbooks, have some current pic's to add, etc.

I'm new to the photo imaging software and I'm using GIMP and plan to write some tut's once I know what I'm doing!!

I'm having some EXTREMELY BASIC problems and have questions I hope someone can help me with. I don't know if it's appropriate to post the question here, but here goes. If not, please tell me where I should put the question....

Example: I create a background page 8.5 x 11 - white. Then I open as a layer a file I bought somewhere (!) and it says it's 4x5. I open it as a layer on top of my 8.5 x 11 white background. I think I should see my background (8.5 x 11) with the 4x5 frame as a smaller layer on the bg. But it looks like the frame is the same as the layer. I click on BG and it shows 8.5 x 11 and I click on layer and it shows 4x5, but when I look at the window, the 4x5 appears to fill up the whole background.. Does that make sense??

Hmm sounds like the first step you may be missing is creating your canvas at the correct resolution.
Your background page needs to be 8.5x11 inches and 300ppi - the resolution makes all the difference. If you cant enter a resolution you need to make sure your page is 2550 x 3300 pixels.
Next when you open the frame file you need to drag it on to your background, it should then show up at teh proportionate size.
Let me know how that works for you
