How do you do torn edges?

I dont' remember if I ever asked this question here or not. I have been trying and trying and cant seem to get the hang of it. I have a book that suggests you use the lasso tool and cut a jagged edge and then erage the selection, but I cant' erase the selection.

how do you all do it?
