You can change the default veiwer, when you go to open up a file, right click in and go down to "open with" then choose which file you want to open it up with and there should be a spot to check a box that says something like "Use this to open all"

Don't throw it out! It's really a great program, and the problems you're having with it (not understanding the icons, etc.) would happen as you get used to any of the major programs that we use for scrapping. Okay, now on to the advice I have for you.

First, see if your version has the video tutorials. I know they're in 8.5 but don't know about earlier versions. To access them, go to the help menu. If you have them, they will walk you through each of the tools.

Second, the problem you're having with the program opening everything. Is it PI Explorer or PI itself that is opening? Once you know which it is, go to that program.

If it's Photo Explorer--File/Preferences/Associate

If it's PI--File/Preferences/General/System/Associate.

Under each one you'll be able to click whichever file types you want PI to open, such as UFOs, and unclick the rest.
