Open your alphabet - or whatever
they should all be "active" with a moving dotted line
use the selection tool and select whatever you want
there should be a thin blue line around the selected object
right click your mouse and select copy - you should then be able to paste the selected object onto your work.

However, this sometimes happens :

If, after you have selected your object and there is a thin blue line around it, but not all the other objects are "active" with the dotted line, you must go to "pick" and then click on the selected object - this will make ALL objects "active" again, and then proceed to copy and paste.
