In the Photo Frame gallery, if you choose the Edge Frame, then make sure the Photo Edge box is unchecked, than you shouldn't get the white edge (are you speaking of the torn paper look, is this where you're seeing the white?). Without this option selected, the tear will go right up to the edges of your photo.
Also, in the Edge Frames, the first few lines of masks have some great borders that will soften the edges, I've got a couple favorites in there that I use quite often!
And one other option is to just change the Soft Edge setting in the top menu when you have the photo selected with the Pick Tool. This blends it into the background evenly if you're looking for that kind of effect.
