if anyone has a sec for a BASIC question...

Hi- I have been playing w/ photoimpact 10 and am having an unbelievably tough time. I can import a background "paper" then I import a picture- first, I can't figure out how to tell it to switch to a new layer (or does it automatically do it for every thing you import?). When it does import a pic to a second layer, and I go to crop the picture, it crops the background paper too. How do I work with 1 layer and how do I start new layers. I have actually READ the manual regarding layers and have not found an answer. I keep thinking once I figure this out it will be downhill.... I guess I can hope! Thanks in advance...

I have PhotoImpact 8.5....so I am not sure how different the two are. But on mine, each thing you import is on a different layer. Does the layer access panel come up on the side so you can see which layer is highlighted to be worked next? (Hope that makes sense)

Instead of crop for the picture, go to the transform tool, where you can rotate, and resize pictures and things.

When I need to crop something I open it straight from file and do it then just copy and paste onto the main layer. Hope that makes sense.

Let's see if this works...the green arrow shows you the layer manager. When you have items on your layout....it will show you what layer is highlighted in blue. So if the item you want to resize is highlighted...then you can just resize that one instaed of the whole thing.

the black arrow shows you where the transform tool is. Make sure the pic you want to resize is highlighted, then go to the transform tool, then up top to the tool bar that comes up and click on the button to resize it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response; I live in FL and have no power and just got internet (have a generator) which is why it has taken me awhile to respond.

Do I understand you, you open a pic. in photoimpact and crop it then bring it into the file with your page? Can you not manipulate a picture (besides resizing) w/in the file containing the whole page- ie cutting into a shape etc.

As soon as I get power I will try your suggestions (working on battery I have limited time on the computer). Thank you again.

Yes, I crop first, then add the photo. PhotoImpact deals differently with layers than most programs, everything you add to the page is automatically placed on it's own layer. To activate the layer, just use the point tool to click on the item in the layer, and that layer will become active.
