Question Creating ribbon

I'm just getting started and loving this! I'm using PI8 and would like to learn how to make different types of ribbon. I have no clue where to start, so any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a book that describes how to do it, but I never tried. Do you just want a straight ribbon? I can read thru it and try to paraphrase and post it if you want?

Let me know, I want to learn to do it myself, so it would help me out too.

This is what my book says, but I havent' tried it yet. I will try later and show if it looks okay.......

"Basic Grosgrain ribbon.
begin wiht a basic rectangle filled with a linear gradient with an angle of about 45 degrees. Draw thin, vertical lines along the width of the rectangle. duplicate the original layer twice, and then use the deform/transform tool to shrink the height of each of the duplicate rectangles to get one thin rectangle along the top edge and one along the bottom edge. Merge the layers and add some shading. "

I hope that makes sense. I want to give it a try. Someone else may have better directions, I took that from my book.
Show us what you come up with when you give it a try.

Ok, I ended up doing mine a little dif. I used the fill gallery to choose a fill for mine instead of making all the lines. I still want to play around with it. I think next time I will add a subtle bevel to the upper and lower rectangle that make up the edges of the ribbon. Here's mine.

For Grosgrain ribbon, I start with a new image a little longer than the size I want my finished ribbon. I draw a narrow 3d rectangle, border=15 depth=30, with a gradient fill. Duplicate this rectangle 6-7 times and align all objects vertically, then space evenly, then group. You may want to save this group or the single rectangle in your Easy Pallette, so you can change the colors and use it again. Duplicate this group as many times as needed to fill your space. Use the align tool to tweak everything until you like the results. Merge as single object. Now, using a color a little darker than the darker end of the gradient, play around with different paint and texture settings and use the paint on edges effect (Effects>Creative>Paint on Edges) to make the finished edges. When you have a result you like, use the magic wand tool with a low similarity setting, uncheck 'search connected pixels', click on 'select on objects' and select the painted edge. Use an embossing effect to give the edge a little more texture (I like FM Tile Tools blend emboss)
Now go to the Easy Pallette painting gallery and play around with different textures. I like to use the fabric texture, but tweak it a little by right clicking and selecting the 'modify properties and apply' option. The corrugated and crumpled textures produce some interesting effects, as well.
Don't forget to save your finished product in your Easy Pallette for easy access.

HTH,
KayLynn

Oooh,I am going to try that way next KayLynn.

This is so much fun messing around with. I did this one kind of the way KayLynn described in the beginning of her post. I didnt' start out with a 3 d image though, so I think that will make a difference. I still need some tweeking, but it is so cool just to mess around with it.
