Need Help with Wording
When I was in high school, I thought Diana, Princess of Wales, was just wonderful.
I am trying to find the right phrase for my journaling for that page...
I put:
"I loved to try to emulate Diana, Princess of Wales"
Is emulate used properly here. Dictionary.com definition is To strive to equal or excel, especially through imitation: an older pupil whose accomplishments and style I emulated.
To compete with successfully; approach or attain equality with. Compete is not correct which is why this is throwing me off.
Is "imitate" better?
Is "Diana, Princess of Wales, was my role model" descriptive enough?
Am I being too anal? LOL

maybe you could say something like.... I have always tried to do what I think Princess Diana would have done
I would use imatate rather than emulate
the question about the role model... I don't think just saying that is descriptive enough, but you could go on to say how she changed you....ie.. Princess Diana has always been my role model, I stived to have have the grace and poise she had, I dressed with class, and treated other respectfully...... or something to that

good idea.. I sometimes have trouble journaling.
how about :
Diana, Princess of Wales,
was inspirational to me. I
tried her hair-do, her style
of clothes, hats and most
importantly I admired her poise.
?
Thanks again!

You used "emulate" just right in your first version, but your new wording seems to flow very well and get your point across.

Ok, you've challenged the English major in me.
How about:
Diana, Princess of Wales,
was very inspirational to me. I
tried her hair-do and her style
of clothes and hats. Most
importantly, I admired her poise.
I agree with Leah. I kind of liked how you used emulate in your first paragraph. You could even just replace "tried" with "emulated" in the paragraph above.
... I emulated her hair style, and copied the beautiful clothing and hats she wore. ...
HTH.

I know I'm coming to this too late, but here's my two bits:
cut the "was inspirational to me" and make it "inspired me." Less passive and less words. (I was a journalism major - I'll probably never escape that.)
