question on file types and sizes

I am trying to submit some elements from this morning's element challenge and I'm running in to a bit of trouble with file size. My two backgrounds I've created are very large - 7.5 M and 9M in jpg format, 12x12 inches, 300dpi. Doesn't this seem really big? The purchased kits I have seem to have backgrounds at around 1 - 2 M.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'd like to get these sent off!

Thanks!

filesize

The size of a 12x12 piece of paper saved in JPG format will vary depending on the amount of compression used, AND how much change there is from pixel to pixel in the file.

By change between pixels, I am referring to color change. A background that is highly texturized will often be a LOT bigger than one with large blocks of solid color and no texture.

If you want an illustration, go look at the new clips I put on my website today. There are 3 background papers. Each one has more detail/texture than the one previously. All are saved using the same compression. The file sizes are listed, so you don't have to download them to check.
