Regarding Digital Image Pro... you can do seamless tiles if you have a plug in by Redfield...

i seem to be a little slow to understand all this.

would someone explain step by step how to use these in photoshop on a 300 dpi layout without the design becoming miniscule?

With my limited experience and knowledge, this is what I have figured out to do. Open the file you want to use, go to define pattern. Then go to the layout you are wanting to add the pattern to.
Now I am working from memory as I am at another computer right now. Go to add new adjustment layer, pattern fill. You can use the slider to adjust the size of the pattern (number of times the pattern repeats) , but at 72 dpi you cannot make it too large as it loses resolution.
If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I will go through it again when I am at my other computer.
