Moving Fonts

I have stored all of my fonts (a LOT! ) in my fonts folder on my computer. I would like (NOT ) to organize them by type-outline, grunge, etc. Could I a.) move them out of this folder onto my EHD and b.) if I did this, would it affect the stuff I have used the fonts on. If I can't do this, could I at least make a new folder on my computer and move the fonts into this? What I want to wind up with is my fonts organized into folders so I can find what I want to use quicker. TIA!!!

Have you checked out -The Font Thing- it is a free download. You would be able to organize or make different collections. It also works great for viewing fonts. I keep the majority of my fonts (downloaded ones) in a separate folder. I use The Font Thing to search for something I like then "Load" it for what ever LO I am working on. BUT--you would want to duplicate the text layer and simplify it because the next time you open it you will get the "font substitution" error since it wasn't "Installed" --but you can always reload the font. Anyway- its free and pretty easy to use. I use it with PSP and PSE

To try to answer your questions
Yes- if you delete fonts from your font folder you will get a font missing- font substitution message when you try to re-open a LO that used the deleted font (PSP and PSE experience-don't know about other programs.
You can copy the fonts to another folder without any problem...just have a different name and location---but most programs will only "read" from the windows font folder (I think).
I have several different folders with fonts (in the organizing process myself). I use The Font Thing to browse the folders for what I want. You have the option to "load" or "install" the font.
This way I can keep the Windows Font Folder a bit more tidy so the font dropdown list isn't so long in my program.
I'm really tired hope this makes sense.LOL

Thank you for your response. I tried The Font Thing but it didn't click with me. I use AMP Font Viewer. I am sure it has more capabilities than I use it for. I just use it to see what fonts I have. I think I could live with the font substitution message. I think I will play with this a little. I might try moving just a few fonts to another folder on my EHD and then see if AMP lets me import them to use in a layout. I have organized everything so far-even my brushes!!!! Whew!!! My fonts are the last thing. If I don't do something soon, it will be impossible. I have a lot od Dingbats I want to use to make brushes and custom shapes, but it is so hard to go through everything.

You don't happen to have ACDSee organizer do you? That shows you what the fonts look like also and you can change the "word" that appears on the preview. Also when you have the font folder selected with ACDSee open those fonts are available right away from your program and ready to use. At least they are with PSP but I am sure it works like this for Adobe also.

No, I don't have ACDSee. I have seen a lot of people are using it and almost got it. However, I have organized everything in folders and put them on my EHD. I moved just my dingbats to a folder on my EHD. Then, when I double clicked on a font, the preview came up. I minimized the window and was able to use the font in PSCS2. I use AmpFont Viewer (free!) to see my fonts. So far, things seem to be going well. If this doesn't work out, I will seriously look into ACDSee.

Okay, so I couldn't see my fonts all of the time when they were minimized to the task bar. So, I downloaded The Font Thing. This is pretty neat. I can temporarily install them, use them, then uninstall. It also "sees" the fonts on my EHD.
