Okay, would someone please tell me what size and file type is required for backgrounds. Do I do it 12x12 or smaller? Does it matter if backgrounds are png or jpg? And what size should other elements be? for example tags, alphabets and other page embellishments? TIA

Elements should be about the size they will actually be on the page. So yes, a background should be 12x12. If it isn't easily adaptable to 8.5x11 then it would be nice if you could include one that size as well (but not necessary!).
All elements should be 300dpi. Backgrounds can be .jpeg's all others must be .png.
