font manager

Just wondering what is the best font manager. I have heard of the font thing but I'm not sure I can use it with windows XP. Would like to know what others are using.

Also would like to know what to do when there are too many fonts. I have about 1000 and I understand I shouldn't have more than 500. So what do I do with all the rest if I still want to keep them and use them.

Thanks

i use font thing with xp, but also hp fontsmart. (whichever i'm in the mood for). font thing's great, but the uninstall deletes the fonts. in fontsmart the uninstall just moves them to another folder. you need to do what i just had to do which is sit and go through them all. i'd get an organizer first though!!
but just make a fonts2 folder so that it'll be right under your fonts folder. then you can access them thru your font manager but they won't bog your system down. and i'd cut them down to 200 instead of 500. i just kept the system standard ones, then the ones i used almost daily and the rest went to fonts2. some i organized into folders there by appearance or maker, but i got tired of that! there's a good article in one of the last free newsletters though. all about font organization check those out under downloads, free ezine previews. hth. I use AMP Font Viewer, it is a freeware program.
What I like best is that when you want to use a font, you tell it to install it temporary, and then when you close the program it uninstalls the font.

Having too many fonts on your pc slows you down and can cause your pc to hang.
I only keep the nessesary fonts installed, everything else I keep in a seperate folder and that folder is sorted into folders, like Christmas, Halloween, Hearts, calligraphy ect.

Work for me.

If you are using PhotoShop, you can put your additional fonts in the Adobe shared fonts file. They are listed in PhotoShop drop down menu right along with the windows fonts. It saves all the loading and unloading into the windows fonts. It doesn't slow down the loading of windows or photoshop. You will still need a program to view, list and print out samples of these fonts. I ***embled mine into a book and keep it right beside me when creating.
