Question about The Font Thing

Yes, I'm bad and have all my fonts installed in the windows font folder. I've since learned that this is NOT good and I'm looking at installing The Font Thing. So, does it mattered what drive I put it on? dfsdfsThe fonts I use are on drive c, but I scrap from drive e. Should I DL it to drive c? Will the fonts automatically go in there? Do I have to go back and put them in there manually? Should I take them out of Windows first? I have them in a seperate font folder as well, so I can get them when I need to.

I realize that the answer might be on here somewhere, but it took SBB forever to get me here and I'm not spending the next couple of hours going through old topics. LOL!

Thanks!!

Well, lets see if I can sort your question out! LOL I'm a fontaholilc, I have THOUSANDS of fonts!

1) NEVER have more than 1000 fonts installed in Windows (it slows your computer down, try to keep it under 750 if you can.)

2) The fonts that aren't installed can be stored anywhere you like. You can put them on any drive or even a CD. When you want to use them you can use The Font Thing to open them or you can right click on the font and select Open with Windows Font Viewer (part of windows). It won't matter when you run your graphics program where you have the fonts stored.

3) If you download new fonts, you have to tell it where to put the new font, you can install it in Windows or you can store it with the rest of your fonts. They will not automatically go to any particular location, you have to tell them where.

4) Remove the extra fonts from Windows manually and store them with the rest of your fonts. Be careful not to uninstall any font that is needed for the computer to run. If you use The Font Thing to uninstall, you have to retreive them from the Recycled folder! Don't empty your Recycled folder until you can move them to your new storage location! The Font Thing automatically puts them in the Recycled folder.

5) The Windows web site has the list of fonts that should not be uninstalled, it depends slightly upon what version you are running.

I hope this helped!

It don't think it matters Amy. I just put it on my c drive along with my other software downloads in the programs folder.

BTW- I would make a complete *copy* of your windows font folder *before* you do *anything*. I always copy/paste. I never cut/paste anything- LOL! I then make sure that the copy is indeed there before I delete *anything*!

Sorry Amy, I didn't realize you were wondering where to download The Font Thing. Yes, just install it in C drive like other programs. It automatically begins with finding installed fonts, then you can direct it to look anywhere else, in any drive or folder you choose.

It should not matter which drive you install it on as there is a browse feature in TFT that you can go to any of the drives you have. My windows and major programs are on C but I have TFT on D and it works perfectly:-) Hope that helps.
