question about making brushes

i have been dabbling in making my own grunge brushes lately and have had some good results.

however, once i define them, and then use them in a 300dpi LO, they are teeny tiny and when i up the size of them, the quality ain't so great. the images that i use to get my brushes from are 300 dpi... i just select the portion i want as a brush and define it.

so i guess my question is, do i need to be making my selections bigger as far as how much i am selecting? or do i need to do at a higher/lower resolution?

or am i totally asking this question in the wrong spot?

btw, i am in PS7.

any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Your best bet is probably to select a larger area.

When you select an area to make a brush from, the brush is going to the same number of pixels as the selected area.

If your original image is 300dpi, and you select a 1 inch square area, your defined brush size will be 300 px. If you use that 300 px brush on a 300dpi layout, the brush will cover 1 inch.

If your original image is 300dpi, and you select a 1/2 inch square area, your defined brush size will be 150 px. If you select a 2 inch square area, your defined brush size will be 600 px.

If your original image is 600dpi, and you select a 1/2 inch square area, your defined brush size will be 300 px. If you use that 300 px brush on a 300dpi layout, the brush will cover 1 inch.

Hope I didn't make that more confusing
