Unhappy Dodge and Burn Tool...

Hi Ladies,

I've been trying to figure out how to use the dodge and burn tool, but still have no clue to what it does...can someone please tell me what it's used for and how to use it?

Thanks!

The "dodge" tool lightens areas, and the "burn" tool darkens them. They're really more like tools a photographer would use back in the film days.
Personaly, I never liked either one, and have always used other methods.

As Vikki explained the tool lightens and darkens areas ..but they can be used on other things than photos!
Its sort of hard to explain. I use the burn tool to paint in impressions like for example when i create a strap like the in the image attached. I have used teh burn tool to paint in impressions from the metal bar underneath, the make it look as if perhaps teh inside edges of the strap and the very outside ends our folded over a bit an dthat the brads are pushed into the serface. I did this example pretty quick but hopefully you will get teh idea
You can also use it to enhance shadows or any number of things really

I *LOVE* my dodge and burn tools! They definitely take a little practice to get used to them, but they are wonderful for adding realistic shadows and highlights for depth. I use mine often when I am "threading" ribbon through a ribbon buckle, for example. Depending on where my light source is, I will dodge and burn the "straight" ribbon, and after I am through, it looks like it is going "over" the ribbon buckle. I also like to use the burn tool to add depth and texture to background papers...you can use a custom brush and burn over the surface of the paper. Try experimenting a bit - you'll be happy you did!! :-)
