Packaging & Saving Kits

P.S. I agree with your idea of saving some of the elements at a larger size, because some of them can be pretty cool on a layout, like a very large alphabet at the beginning for a child's name. Some of mine will be larger than usual, and some won't have shadows, so the element can be used in more ways and rotated, then the customer can shadow how they like.

TOU are either done as Wordpad, Notepad, MS Word or PDF files. Some people also include a "don't redistribute/no piracy" image file.
Previews are normally around 500x500 pixels at 96 or 72ppi.

So silly question for you... Besides the questions we have answered, have you done any other research on designing and selling digital kits? From your earlier post, you mentioned that you downloaded "one" kit - do you not do digital scrapbooking yourself?

Have you tried offering one of your kits as a blog freebie or download freebie at a site? Have you read up on copyright infringement? (It is another extremely important aspect of creating digital kits.) Do you know which fonts you can and can't use?

There are so many more things you need to know, but it isn't up to the members of this site to tell you all of the answers. Sorry if I sound a little negative, but want you to realize that it is much more to selling designs than just popping a kit onto a website, and you really need to do some real research before you are ready for that step.

Smile Saving & Packaging Kits

Hi,
Oh yes… I’ve spent many hours and days and late nights researching… and as you probably know, it is a lot to learn, and you’ve got to find answers somewhere, right? I am not only designing, but need to do all the research for web design, my wording, colors, design tutorials, how to use the programs, etc. I came across this forum for “scrapbooking as a business” and hoped it would be a good resource for me, and it has. I’ve seen many others asking questions about getting a site going, calls, etc. and that’s what I’m understanding this forum is for. Digital scrapbooking is great, because it seems to be a “family” all helping each other out, whether or not you have your own business or are a designer, or a wanna-be.
I’ve read a lot in all areas, but copyright is so gray (if it says commercial-free it doesn’t mean you can use an image for a background and then sell the background). Some mean that you can use their image in brochures for advertising, not for selling on a background. As far as fonts, that is a bit scary for me, because I know there are sites out there that have fonts for commercial use, but that doesn’t mean they actually own that font to give that permission.
I’ve created my own brushes, read about actions, made my own color schemes, learned a lot about PS and DIP, searched and searched for many tutorials so I can learn those tricks and create all those beautiful elements. I even calibrated my monitor and printer! Ha! I started this over a year ago and fell in love with it and thought why not try it for a business, hoping I could be a stay-at-home mom… little did I know what was involved. Plus I’m trying to learn how to create a website on top of it, and I’m doing well, but will hire most of that out. I don’t have my site up yet, but have a domain name, created my logo, blinkies, wording, colors, and many many designs… but I just need to pull everything together. Thought I’d have a simple site, but researching brought me to a more complex idea for a site and there has gotten to be a lot more competition than when I first looked into this. I also have many leads for marketing one being digiscrapdesigner.com (what a great site!), digishoptalk, and others. I came across many of these just by reading, going to forums, etc.
To answer one of your questions, I do digital scrapbooking but have only used my own designs, so I really haven’t downloaded many kits, however, I have downloaded some cool actions.
I’m on my own at this point to get my site going, so it’s been very challenging. I so want my site up so I can continue to design, I’ve even posted some want ads looking for a trade-off in webdesign for free images. I’m also open to a designer on my team in trade for web design assistance.

Thank you Kim... that's exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded a kit and opened the TOU file, but couldn't tell what type of file it was. I knew I could attach a Word TOU document, but want to keep it similar to what others do. Thanks again.

Good luck with this.. most of these sites fizzle out after a couple months because traffic is hard to come by and you need to get the word out.

I think that creating a Notepad.txt file for the Terms Of Use is both easier and faster to open, besides that viruses can be spread through Word.doc files to others computers.

When you downloaded the kit and opened the TOU file which program on your computer did it open with? That's usually a good indication to what type of file it is and which kind program it was created with.
