Question Dover help please

Sara Carling told me about Dover. It looks like a fabulous resource for me as a beginning designer. I am on their e-mail list now and I've already received 2 weeks of samples....BUT.....apparently I didn't save them correctly. What should I do so that I will be able to view & alter them for my kits?

Thanks so much,
Sara E

These directions are for using a PC. If you use a Mac, someone else will have to help you.

When you have the image you want displayed on your screen, right click the image and choose "Save Picture As". You will then be taken to a screen which allows you to choose where you want to save your image. Pick your location and save the image, making sure that you include the "." and the file extension, usually "jpg". That's all there is to it. Easy Peasy.

thanks,,,,,,,,,it sounds as easy as I thought it was when I saved them originally ...

did you ever have to convert the file format? one that I have is a .gif and the others say invalid formats

I really want to purchase a CD, but I want to make sure I can work with the samples correctly first

thanks again

Not surprised that some of them are .gif files. Especially the black and white ones. Just make sure when you save them that you aren't changing the file extension from the one assigned. That is, if it's named 1234.jpg, don't change it to 1234.gif or anything else. You can change the 1234 part, but not the .jpg or .gif part, that will make you get the error you mention. Try one more time to save the misbehaving files and see if it works.

Sara, you mentioned wanting to use these samples in your kits. Keep in mind that the samples that are being sent through their newsletter are only 72 dpi (not 300 dpi which is standard for kits). They probably would work well as a brush, but definitely not as a featured element. (I get the samples too and they're SOOO much fun!) I used to buy the clip art books and scan the images, but when I bought my first Dover CD I never went back to scanning!

dang...thanks so much for pointing out the 72 DPI thing for the samples ...... how can the samples be used for kits? do you only use them for things you keep on the web?

ok....I guess that means that I need to go ahead and decide on which CD I want first...too many choices....oh lovely

Sorry Sara, I should clarify...

Depending on the sample, you could probably use it as an all-over, repeating pattern on say a 12"x12" paper at 300dpi, but the pattern (depending on the original size available as the downloadable sample) might end up smaller.

I suggest experimenting...save your sample, open it up in your software, create two blank canvases, one 12"x12" at 72dpi and another one 12"x12" at 300 dpi. Fill each of your canvases with the downloaded sample clip art and you'll see what I mean about the size variation.

The best thing to do is to experiment. There are some samples that work better than others. Have fun!

You can print them out and then scan them at a high resolution and large print size until you get around to buying the CDs.
