For love or money?

I see so many different people who are selling kits at so many different sites, this must be a very rewarding business. I read in the forums all the time how much everyone loves to design, scrap etc.

Here is the million dollar question!!
How much money can a person expect to make? I have heard you can not support a family.
OK but can you make a house payment?
Buy a car?
Pay for groceries?
Buy your self a new outfit?

I know there are favorite designers out there who have a following (dont they deserve it) but what about the average designer who does not have a name out there.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

talking about money earned is always so foreign to me. I was raised to not ask people that cause it's rude, so i always feel weird asking/telling about it. but realistically, unless you ARE one of those big names, you can't expect to make a whole lot. Now, i have really only started selling in July and I SUCK at advertising. So, that is my downfall. But truth be told, unless I have a good sale (which usually brings in some good money, but still not THAT good), I can expect to make only about enough to pay my electric bill. lol! so is it financially rewarding? for some, i'm sure... for the average designer, we do it for some extra money and because we enjoy designing and seeing our work used by other scrappers, at least, this is my humble opinion. perhaps i'm wrong. but if you think about the vast number of digital designers out there, you have to really take that into consideration when thinking about how much we could possibly be making. there aren't THAT many digital scrappers... yet

You are right. I would never put someone on the spot and ask them exactly how much money they make, that would be rude. But, I would do some research into a career field I was looking into. I know this is not a career for most but if my husband is going to keep badgering me about how much time I spend scrapbooking I thought if I made a little business out of it maybe I would hear less complaints.

I know that many of the designers do this (make kits) for the love of it, I wish I had the time. Right now I am struggling to find the time to make my layouts.

lol, sorry if i sounded like i was directing that comment at you! I really didn't mean it like that. I just mentioned that because it's not that I mind talking about it, I just always feel weird talking about it. I ask my designer friends how much they made bcause they have asked me. But when someone first told me how much they made, I was like, shocked cause that is just information that i never would have just offered up out of the blue. and then sometimes i feel lame cause i only made like an 8th of what someone else made one month. that's all i meant by that comment. you are smart to research it. good luck!

This is a great question. Unfortunately, the stats are just not out there for these types of work. And, as you formulate a business plan, it's an important step. I'd love to see more answers to this question for my own research.
