Getting Started

I have a basic question...

How does one begin a digital scrapping business? I am mostly interested in creating layouts for other people (such as those who want them, but don't want to do the work) or selling layouts. I am doing some as favors now, but would like to sale them eventually. I'm just not sure how to go about getting started.

Also, someone posted that they were selling digital layouts (created with Photoshop and without kits) on E-bay. How does that work?

Any suggestions are welcome.

I'd say the biggest thing to be aware of even before you start scrapping for others is which of the elements and fonts that you already have are okay for commercial use. A number of digi-kit designers are now allowing commercial use (possibly with an additional license fee).

The next thing I would think is finding your customers. Do you know enough folks who would be interested in buying LOs? Do you have a connection to mothers' groups or other organizations that you could advertise with.

There's pricing to consider too. If you read back in this forum, these issues have been touched on before.

HTH and good luck with your venture!

I am also starting up my own business doing layouts for others. I have thought about the same things... I think I've pretty much decided that I won't depend on being allowed to use other people's design elements. I think I'll just create my own, and then I won't have to worry that I'm infringing on any copyright laws. Then my only issue will be fonts... If I absolutely love an element and have to use it, I will then request permission, but I definitely don't want to rely on that.

I think to get started, you need to put together a portfolio and spread the word. I am in the process of building a website for my business, too. This is a great way to show off samples of your work. And it allows you to get business from anywhere.

As for ebay, that might be a great way to go. I'm pretty sure there's a "services" category, where you can offer creative services. I'm not sure how it works, but you can check it out. I hadn't even thought about ebay as a way to get business.

Are you going to offer custom layouts, pre-designed layouts, or both? I think I will just offer custom layouts. I've never been a fan of the pre-designed layouts, but I may change my mind, once I have created more elements and layouts.

Good luck w/ starting your business!

Jennifer
