My use of the coins are in a rust type paper where the image of a penny is silghtly burned into the paper faded in and out here and there so it's nothing that could ever actually be used for currency, i'm just a big nervous wreck about using something illegally.

When you stop to think about it, somebody was paid to design the coin so the artwork would be copyright that person. Is there any way you can design your own little coin to work with instead? That way, there is no chance of getting into trouble.

I'd say anything to do with the US TREASURY would be a no-no... JMHO; I'm sure you could find some info on it online... but I'd certainly say you should use a from-scratch creation or something you KNOW for certain is not liable to copyright.

I just happened to see some coins (a Quarter, both sides) on Stockxchange and even though it was a photo. It had been blurred/shadowed purposely around the date and the wording..

Ages ago my father tried to use a version of a US bill as a business card. Even though it was obviously not legal tender (business card sized, his info all over it, I think he even put 'Not legal tender' on it, but not sure there) - the US Treasury still got cranky and made him change it...
