Ack! I broke the flash on my Canon Powershot!

I've got a nice little point & shoot - a Canon Powershot S1 IS and last night I flipped the flash closed & something got stuck underneath it so it wouldn't shut all the way. I couldn't open it & couldn't close it. So I had to pry it open, remove the string that was caught under it & now it won't fully close & won't open automatically. It doesn't really affect the working of the camera, but I have to manually force the flash open if I want to use it. Or pay to get it fixed, because I've looked at it & can't figure out what to do to fix it.

Anyone ever have this problem before? And figured a way to fix it?

Ack that sucks... something similar happened to me with my Fuji Finepix S602.... love that camera...

but used my camera for a bunny breakfast when Megan was in gymnastics and someone put a CF card in it the wrong way or something or forced it in there and bent a pin in it! Now I can't use CF cards in it Only SmartMedia (which are becoming obsolete)!!!

At least I had the other drive to put the media into; but when I researched it - it would cost me about $300.00 just to get it fixed! That camera is at least 4-5 years old; and I'd rather put that money towards a new camera! So just suck it up

I'm thinking this is what I'm going to have to do. Even if it's cheap to fix, I should instead start a new camera fund and just live with the flash the way it is. Maybe by Christmas I can have a new DSLR instead! I'd love a Canon Rebel DSLR, so maybe this is a good thing!

Yeah.. don't try to fix it - it's not worth the cost. You might try sending it in to Canon just to see what they might do.. My Canon S2 stopped working and it was a 2 year old camera... I had even bought it used but I sent it in to Canon just to see how much it would cost to fix. They sent it back to me fixed for free in 3 days... and they even replaced the sensor and did a firmware upgrade. you have nothing to lose beyond shipping costs....

Even if you get a new camera.. its a great camera to have for backup.. especially since once you move to a DSLR.. you lose your ability to capture video. I use my P&S camera's primarily for shooting quick video for my blogs... its much simpler than pulling out my Digital Video Camera for the quick stuff!

Good Luck!

Pesto, you have a blog? Do share....

So sorry Jenn. That's why I had to get a new camera recently, the flash on my Fuji finepix was washing everything out, over exposing. I haven't a clue why. I figure we can still use it as an extra outdoor, no flash camera and for, like Pesto said, for video.

Hmmm. I have the Canon Powershot S3 camera now and I have to manually open the flash all the time. Am I missing something?
