I have a Canon Rebel XT and always have my Sony Cybershot in my purse very happy with both cameras although sometimes I take better pictures with the p&s than the Rebel only because I need more practice I guess

Oh Amy....you have got me in so much trouble!!!!

I have been helping a friend pick out a digi cam and it was between the Panasonic Lumix (10x zoom) and the Canon S3. She choose the Lumix because it was more compact and she wants it for when she goes to Sanibel Island, FL in Oct. At any rate, I was here at SBB and read your post RE the Canon S3 and saw your photos. Absolutely, beautiful!!!! I currently own the Fuji S7000, BUT I now I have Canon S3 fever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, it's all your fault!!!!LOL I am going to start working on it, as the prices are really good right now.

This totally depends on a) how much you want to spend b) how serious you are about photography.

If you don't want to spend more than $400 for a camera.. then you are in P&S mode and I'd highly recommend the Canon S3 of Panny FZ series.. I have a Canon S2 and it is very good..

If you are into doing some serious photography.. then you are in DSLR land and the land of spending $$$$. You can get a nice used D50 for around $400... however, where you really will spend the money is in lenses.. you can get a kit lens for around $200 that will rival the P&S S3 lens.. but for really sharp, clear and spot on photography, you need to spend a lot more. I just purchased 3 new lenses for around $1200 each - for me photography is a second business so its ok cause I make that back quickly.. but the difference in the photos I've taken with the new lenses is night and day from the old ones in most cases.

In any event... help us narrow things down for you and we'll be able to help further.

But.. to echo the others.. the S3 is a great camera.. I'd stay away from the S5 for now.. the price difference is too great compared to the tech differences.. (2MP higher, newer sensor, bigger LCD, 1600 ISO mode). The only good thing is the bigger LCD but 2" is large enough.

Good Luck!
