Camera settings

I have a Canon S3 IS. I've set it to the largest picture setting 2816 x 2112 but when I check on Photoshop the resolution is only 180 ppi. How do I set it to 300 ppi? I ask b/c our scrapbook page are set to 300dpi.

My sister wanted to send me some pictures to do some pages for her but what size should I tell her I need the pics?

Your camera will set the ppi to a recommended value but it is really not relavent at all.. the only thing that matters is your photo size which is 2816x2122.. once you are ready to print or save for web.. then the DPI comes into play.. ppi could be set to 72 and it wouldn't matter.. so basically is doesn't matter - just be sure you don't resample your image with the ppi set to 72...

While not well written.. the info here is quite accurate and may help you understand.. http://www.graphic-design.com/Photos...esolution.html

Good Luck!

Thanks I have another question. I wanted to create a magazine cover type layout at 16x20 300 ppi. The picture I have is 1200x1600 6.667x8.889 inches at 180 ppi BUT when I put it on a 300ppi 16x20 inch canvas the very same picture goes down to 4x5.33 inches.

I tried stretching the photo but it began to look washed out so to speak.

ETA Pesto I just read the article you posted about sampling up...I guess I can't do what I wanted to do eh?

HI
You can't sample up without losing some quality.
When you open your photo in Photoshop go to Image>Image Size - make sure that bicublic sampling is unchecked and set the resolution to 300ppi (sound slike it opens at 72ppi default for you)
The resulting inch/pixel measurement is the maximum size you have to work with without losing some print quality.

correct.. however, there are some extremely good plugin programs out there that produce amazing results when upsampling. I use genuine fractals product to upsample and have been able to get very nice 20x30 prints from sharp 6mp photos. Also, Qimage has some nice algorithms for upsampling (or uprezing) which you can embed into the file if you are sending it out to print or you can just print from the application.

Both products should have free fully usuable demos on their websites.. give em a try - they might produce the results you are looking for!
