Suggestions on a new camera for a photography beginner

Ok guys, as I'm sure most of us have - I'm looking to move from a basic point and shoot to a 'real' camera. Problem is, other than wanting the ability to take multiple shots much quicker than my current camera, I really don't know what i want/need.

I want something suitable for a beginner that isn't going to cost a fortune, but will give me room to grow as a photographer (once I figure out what I'm doing) and of course great pictures of my kiddies. Any suggestions?

Probably a prosumer model which is between a compact and a DSLR would be a good choice. Still lots of room to grow as a photographer and learn manual settings but also fully automatic. Most have a continous or burst shooting mode that will let you take several shots in a row and shutter lag is less than in compacts.
Brand is a different thing altogether - Im a Nion fan but ist best to fins a camera with the features you want rather than a particular brand if you dont already have an allegiance.
Compare features by going to http://www.dpreview.com/ and viewing the newest models in each section. Look for features such as continous mode speeds, shutter lag and perhaps image stabilisation - which makes it easy to take photos of the kids indoors, and then you can do a side by side comparison also.

If you want to jump up to a digital slr both Nikon and Canon have entry level models with lots on them. I actually jumped up one more step to the Canon20D and though it cost more (now it would be the 30D). It has been worth every penny and it will take me years-if ever to grow out of this camera. Good luck.

I would just go with a DSLR and skip the middle ground.. with the newer cameras coming out soon.. you can pick up a Nikon d40 for like $500.. I would also inquire about a used D50.. these run for around $450 or so adn the kit lens will cost you a bit over $70 used. A bargain and you'll never look back. And.. don't spend too much on a body.. in the beginning, you'll be totally overwhelmed as is and with newer models comingn out all the time, you might actually be picking up a new one in a few years..

However, keep in mind that once you move to DSLR.. there are other costs involved - as you get better, you'll want to scrap that kit lens and buy a good one - that can run you between $300 and $900.. you'll probably need a good camera bag for all you gear.. that's another $100 or so. Add on a flash, tripod and things add up quickly.

Good Luck.. do a search there are tons of discussion on this but I stand firm with my Nikon recommendation.

My comment, and I know it sounds stupid, is to visit a camera shop and pick up cameras. For me, the Canon and Nikon offered what I wanted, but when I held the Nikon, it fit better and was more comfortable to hold. I wouldn't suggest that to be your only means of deciding which camera to buy, but if you've got 2 that meet your needs exactly, test them this way to see which one you feel better holding!

I don't have a digital mine is a traditional but i have the slr model and I will never go back . It is so much more fun. Taking action shots is now just an every day thing for me. And the candid photos are no longer blurry. I spend less time trying to get people to stop moving and more time taking photos. Also you can get a good camera bag for less than $100 mine was under $20.00 ( i think heheh ) now granted if you want one to hold extra lenses ect they do go up but a good one just to house your camera should be quite reasonable.

I recently saw a used Nikon D50 for $400 actually.. great deal! Put a $85 50mm on it and you've got a great camera for not much more than a decent P&S.. Let me know if you need add'l info.. I own many and can guide you as well as point you to the best used camera market in the world.. I buy 90% of my used equipment there. Good Luck!
