You know.. I've done tons of research on this topic and couldn't find more than a couple of references to turning off the camera before removing it. I even posted this on a few pro boards and everyone agreed it didn't matter in practice.. the odds of it causing a problem are about as likely as ruining the card from mishandling with normal operation. Not a bad idea.. just not an issue - I usually remove mine with the camera on because I forget to shut it off.. no issues.

No, I never do that. Think I figured it out. It only happens with 1 or 2 gig cards. It's a transfer problem. If I hook up the camera with a USB cord, it doesn't happen. My computer is a little over 2 years old now, believe I need to update my drivers for my card readers.

could be.. so the files are the correct size on the memory card? That would indicate you are correct.

If I may ask what brand of card are you using? I just checked your original post and I didnt see that you mentioned that. I know that operation isnt guaranteed with cards other than Nikon, Scandisk, Toshiba, and Panasonic. Just thought Id throw this idea in the air to see if it helps. I know how frustrating it is when you cant figure out something. And searching the web for some answers is more frustrating then the problem its self.

These are scan disks. But have several new cards and it happens with both Nikons I have - the D-80 and my little Nikon Coolpix 7600. But only the 1 or 2 gb's. As long as I hook the USB from the camera's to the computer everything works fine. If I take out the cards and use the drive on my computer, they don't all transfer over - although the pic numbers and such do. Have googled and found a bunch of threads about it. Computer is a couple of years old. Have found out how to update my drivers to see if that helps. But haven't attempted that yet. Fun, fun...

It must be somthing with your internal USB reader.. if this is hooked up to a motherboard USB port.. there could be a firmware update to correct those ports - strange that the USB works from the camera although these are different ports internally.

To be honest.. if this works with the camera.. I would just stick with it and not play around with firmware updates... they can cause more harm than good.. Odds are you'll be updating your PC soon anyway and the problem will disappear.
