Film camera

My daughter is taking a photography class in high school and has to buy either a single lens reflex w/ 50mm lens (film camera) or a Rangefinder camera w/ lens. Does anyone know about either of these kinds of cameras. The teacher said to spend at least $75 (for a new one) to get a good quality.
Does anyone have one they would like to sell? I know nothing about either of these cameras. Any information would be appreciated!
You would think that with the way technology is now, they would concentrate on teaching digital photography instead??

I am not sure that you can find a SLR for that cheep. I know last year my sis borrowed mine for her class. I got mine at Walmart for $200 something about 3 years ago. I know when my brother took Photography in high school he hit the local Pawn shop's looking for one. You could also try second hand stores and charity shops. I love slr i will never go back to point and shoot

A pawn shop would be a great idea .. but since many of the major manufactureres ahve stopped producing all but the very top of teh range SLR's you should be able to pick one up cheap in most places Have a look at Amazon here to get a guide to prices http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_p/...words=film+slr and then see what you can pick up locally.

I ended up picking up one on ebay for $18.51 . It's an Olympus IS-50. Regular price in the store is about $150- so I figured $18 wasn't bad. Hopefully it will work For a student's 1st semester- it should be fine. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I'm in need of help

Hi, I'm also taking a photography class at my high school and, like Sherry's daughter, it's a requirement that we bring in a camera.

Now, my dad was a real camera nut, but I didn't pay much attention to him and his fascinations, so I'm ignorant of the cameras I found digging through some of his old stuff.

Okay, here's what I found:

Vivitar xv-1
Zeiss Ikon p2107
lloca Rapid-B

I tried looking these up, but just ran into way too many obstacles and was thinking that it would be way easier if I had an expert. So I went looking for a forum and discovered you guys!

Can anyone tell me about these cameras?

Thanks!
SS

Actually, DH wants me to sell our old film camera. It's a Minolta Maxxum STsi. We bought it about 5 years ago for I'm thinkin' about $300. I'd sell it to you cheap. Just PM me if you're interested!

...the reason they want your students to have film cameras is probably so they can do the developing, which is waaaaaaaaaaay fun! I would totally set up my own b/w developing area in my basement if I had the time for it. However, I do enjoy the convience of a digital camera.
