Lens recommendations?

I've been shopping for my first DSLR and have decided on the Canon DRebel XT. I found the body only for a great price online and then you can get upgrade packages with different lenses and/or accessories. But which lens to start with?

Any suggestions?

I am not an expert but I skipped the kit lens and bought the EF 50mm f/1.8 II
and a telephoto lens. I researched it a bit and found it was a good lens to get me started. Good luck! They are a lot of fun!

I got my dRebel a couple of months ago w/the kit lens and it ended up to be about $650 (there was a $100 canon rebate at the time.). Just last week I did go ahead and buy the 50mm 1.8 for about $70 - figure I couldn't go wrong for that price.

I love the camera and the lens and will never regret it...but here are a few thoughts...

The dRebel w/kit lens has a smaller shooting area (lol - have no idea what that's called) compared to my Canon PowerShot. Although I love the lower f stop of my 1.8, it seems to have an even smaller 'shooting area' and you can not zoom the lens in and out like with the kit lens. I'm sure I'll get used to both of those things But the 1.8 does shoot much better in low light - the reason I got it...for the indoor shots so I don't have to use flash.

So I love them, but may have to get another wide-angle lens if I plan to do lots of family/big group photos if I don't want to keep backing up to take the pixs.

Also, I noticed that w/the 50mm 1.8, I can't be too close to the subject either.

My absolute favorite lens for my Rebel is the 50mm 1.8. It's under $70 most places online and imho it can't be beat for portrait work. Crisp, clear and great depth of field. With that said....remember that it's a fixed lens and you'll have to "zoom with your feet" which some people find annoying. Enjoy your new camera....you're gonna love it!

I have the 20D and also bought the 50mm 1.8. Love it. It's a great first lens and as said above, you can't go wrong with the price. What lenses you purchase from there will depend on what type of photos you intend to take. A telephoto lens is also a great one to have but can be very pricey for a good one. I have since bought the 17-85mm IS USM lens and am loving it. I think I will go for a telephoto lens next but that will be a bit down the road.

I got the kit with mine and also the 75-300 lens. I recently bought macro filters for it. I don't think the 18-55 that came with the kit is the greatest lens but I can get some pretty good portrait type photos with it and some great macro shots with it and the macro filters. That said, I use the 75-300 most of the time. I take a lot of nature and landscape photos and it works great for that.

the kit lens isnt that amazing, but its still a decent lens..esp if you need something abit more wide angle..50 mm f1.8 is totally the coolest CHEAP lens out there...!
