My tip is wait until they are willing - seriously, if you try and take some and they're just not into it, it's way more trouble than it's worth - I just wait and try again another time. I also say to my 3yo, Jamie - can I take THREE pictures of your smiling face-- count with me -- then show me all your other faces too! You get silly shots out of it, but I have made them into a LO before now, and I got some nice smiling shots of him too.

With my 20mth old, I usually sit opposite her watching TV, or doing something else she likes and periodically call her name and say smile. She will look up maybe 6-7 times out of 10 and she's sitting still and I can pose her beforehand - LOL!

I have a copy of "How to Photograph your Family" by Nick Kelsh. I bought it 3-4 years ago, and had forgotten a lot of the excellent tips that he provides in the book. He's a pro photographer who took a point and shoot and used it to take great pictures, then explained how he did it. He gives great tips for taking pictures of children, and I really recommend it.

My personal tips are to take a lot of pictures... lots and lots and lots. Even if all you get is one great shot and 30 bad ones, you've got that one great shot still.

And there is nothing wrong with doing layouts of the "Not so good ones" too. I remember when my oldest was 18 mo old and my 2nd was 1 mo. old I tried to do pictures to send in Christmas cards.. McCara would stay still and Robbie wouldn't stay awake.... so I did a whole layout on that... sometimes the story of the "bad" photo shoot is fun too

but I would agree with the others... take TONS of pics.. even if you only get 1 good one out of them

i'm also in the lots and lots of pictures crowd & figure i can get a couple good ones out of a bunch... sometimes i will dress them up, put up the black sheet on the couch and turn on the tv (they don't watch a whole lot)...then, the tv will captivate them just about long enough for me to snap a bunch of pretty good shots w/ their focus in the general direction of the camera...

I just don't get any "good posed" shots period! And I have a point-and-shoot and I feel it is "dying" on me! And I'm not really a good photographer lol.

But somehow I still get tons of pictures to scrap - yay!

If you look in my gallery you can see that there are a lot of photos from the back, kinda from the side, objects...I scrap anything lol!

Not to pimp myself, but here are some of my favorites even though you don't really see a face

Sun Worshiper
There to cath you
Longing
Find your wings

ok, guess I could pretty much put my entire gallery down. Guess most of mine are spontaneous, living in the moment shots and hopefully I'm making up for not getting a full frontal (don't ask me why I had to say it that way lol) by journaling and just telling it like it is - all the bad mommy moments and all
