The real problem with these cameras is the fixed lenses.. you certainly aren't going to get many good shots using a P&S on many action events.. especifally indoors and at a distance.
Most of the cameras then try to compensate by bumping up the ISO to crazy levels.. like 1600 or higher introduce a lot of noise and luminosity issues.

I own a D50 and love it.. however, I also use a Canon S2 and A80.. all 3 have their uses and place.. but not much compares to the complete flexibility of the D50 + 2.8 pro lenses with SB-800 flash.

anyway.. good luck with your decisions..

I purchased the sony H5 a few months ago as I was looking for more zoom and love my
Sony DSC-F717. Neither camera is perfect though, but they are both very good and worth what I spent. Some issues I have with the sony H5 may be user ignorance as I have not had it that long. I am finding that it is harder to get nice clear shots on moving subjects and distant objects. It is also too slow to focus at times. I've found that I can compensate though for that by steadying myself. I pull my arms in close to my body which I think is one of the techniques they recommend in the book. I'll post a couple of pics in my gallery which were taken with the zoom maxed out of birds & other things that were moving and
you can judge for yourself. The H5 does have a time delay mode which comes in handy for getting steadier shots too though as you can set your camera down or on a tripod, set your shot up and then set it for the 2 second delay which gives the camera enough time to steady for those long distance shots of landscapes. And you can purchase an additional telephoto lens that helps sharpen your distance images. Also there is a wide lens that can be purchased as well as a polarizing lens and a few others. The H5 doesn't have the abilities of an SLR but it's fairly easy to use and the colors are amazing. My only other complaint is that the infrared is so bright that this camera really isn't useable for taking pictures of a play or other performance as the red light is distracting to the performers and if they are with 10 feet will likely blind them for a moment.
