Wanted: Compact Digital Camera

I'm in the market again! I'm loving my Canon Powershot G6 which is great for taking photos at special occasions or on trips. But now I'm looking for a nice compact purse-size camera that I can carry around with me daily and take photos of those unexpected moments while I'm out and about. I have about a $275 budget and I'm looking for at least 3.1mp or more. Something with "steady shot" or similar, possibly?

Any suggestions?

Compact digital

Hi -

I use the Sony T-1 as my camera purse. It is the size of a deck of cards and is 5.0 Megapixels. My husbands friend has the Sony P2 or P7 (not sure) but it is similar in size and is 7.1 Megapixels. Both were slightly more than $275 but that was a year ago.

Both take great photos and I don't go anywhere without mine. You never know when that picture perfect moment (or something to remember) will happen.

Serena

I love my Sony cybershot 5mp P10, I am not a photographer at all so I can't compare --but I take it everywhere and has like 5000 pics taken on it and still going strong.

Just a few months ago I posted a similar thread. I got several good ideas but eventually I went out on my own research and bought the Fuji Finepix F10 that had just come out. Now it is about $325, which I know is more than you were thinking but it is a GREAT purse cam! It is 6.3 Megapixels which according to dpreview beats most 7+ minicameras. It has great resolution, which you can see in the comparisons that they have. In fact several websites had almost nothing wrong to say about it. I carry it in my small purse all the time.

You can see several pics that I've taken with it in my gallery and in fact my latest LO has it featured in my hand. I have yet to recharge the battery, and I've taken hundreds of pics.

I think it has a "steady shot feature" too, but check out the review to be sure. One of the best things about it is the time from on to shooting, which is FAST. This is a major problem of mini cams. So check out the reviews at dpreview and make your own decision. Good luck and have fun with the new cam!

I just bought the Pentax Optio WP. It is very compact (about the size of a deck of cards) and can go in the water! It is a Class 8 Waterproof camera which means it can go to a depth of about 5 feet for about 30 minutes. I've taken some fun underwater shots. I'm looking forward to taking it on beach vacations. My kids think it is wonderful! It is 5MP and has a 3x optical zoom. It turns on super fast. It is very user friendly and even has an underwater shooting mode. It uses SD cards and a rechargeable Li-On battery. (I just ordered a backup battery off Ebay for about $5) Retails for about $299. I'd be happy to post some of the underwater shots I've taken. Let me know if you're interested.

NOTE: The first one I bought kept locking up. I returned it and got a second one. I haven't had any problems with it. I bought mine at Costco so I know if anything goes wrong they will take it back. I've read online that others have had "locking up" problems. So, buy this camera from somebody who will back it up!

I love my Canon SD300 which I believe falls into your megapixel and price requirements. The viewscreen is HUGE, battery life is good, and those little SD cards are pretty cute, though I would recommend getting a dongle so you can connect the card directly to the computer instead of wasting battery life when downloading images.

If you're happy with your current Canon, why not stay with the same brand? Might make the software side a bit easier.

everyone is gonna have their own favorites but for me.. the Canon A95 is by far one of the top "portable" cameras out there... just head over to dpreview.com and read up on it. If you'd like to save some $$$... I can highly recommend the A80.. a few years old now but a solid 4MP camera. Once you use a swivel screen LCD.. you'll be hard pressed to go back to a fixed one. Good Luck!
