digital slrs - nikon or canon???

I'm looking to purchase a digital SLR in the next month or two - had an old Olympus 2.1 MP ultra zoom that I loved, but it broke and I need to upgrade I am looking at either the Nikon D70 or maybe the new Canon Rebel XT. Will use it mostly for family, sports shots (I do some photography for a local high school - just learning) - Any advice for those of you who own either one??Thanks so much.

dpreview does excellent reviews of digital cameras etc. I always go to their site when I'm comparing and shopping around

I will admit that I am biased....

...I just got my new Canon EOS 20D about 2 weeks ago and I am in LOVE!!! I am particular to Canons b/c of good reviews and because I really loved my G2.

You might be opening a can of worms with this question . Both cameras are great. Canon seems to be a little ahead of Nikon in technological developments. I've heard that Nikon viewfinders are larger and easier to use if you wear glasses. If you can, go to a store that carries both and hold it a bit to see which one "feels better" to you. I've got a 10D and love it.

It depends what price you are wanting to pay

If its a choice between the canon digital rebel or the nikon d70 go for the nikon most definately. Since you want to do sports shots you need to look at the shutter speeds the camera is capable of.

However, if its a choice between the d70 and the canon 20d - i'd say go for the canon 20d

I too was in the market for a digital SLR and spent a great deal of time reading all the reviews and in the stores looking. After much debate and research I decided on the Olympus Evolt (E-300) I think it has the best of both the Rebel and the Nikon with a price that was more in line. I've been using it this weekend for the first time and am in love with it. I Especially love the 10 pre-programmed choices including night shots, fireworks, sports, etc.

You may want to research this camera as well.
