I found an awesome candlelight photo and do we post ours in the gallery?

The awesome photo is a still life of a bottle, a flower and a candle. It's gorgeous and you can see it here.
I wish the EXIF data was there to see how it was taken.

I took some pics with my new 85mm at f/2 and I played around with the shutter speed and ISO. I eventually chose to go to 200 ISO just because I've been shooting 600 pictures or more during the basketball games at 1600 ISO. I am ready for some smooth no-noise images for once! I also took some pictures with my 50mm at f/2. I guess I will post them in my gallery under a photography folder.

Thanks for the fun challenge!

There is. Click on the photo itself then you should get to a page that has a smaller version of that photo on the right and several others on the left. Hover the mouse over the smaller version of that photo and a menu pops up on the right, one of the choices is "Photo Info" - click on that and it gives the EXIF info.

Thanks, Heather! I just ignored that box since I thought it was only for thumbs up or down (for members).

The EXIF info intrigues me to think bigger. I felt sort of foolish using my 85mm, but this person used a 100mm. I had never even considered stopping down (is that the right term? this up / down stuff confuses me - seems backwards) to f/4. I see the compensation in the shutter speed. This photo has been edited, so it may have been lightened, etc.. The XT must handle high ISOs better than my D30. I am going to try to shoot this same type photo with the same settings and see what I get.

Fun, fun, fun!

Here is one of my tries last night:

Exposure .7 sec f/2 85 mm ISO 200 (It says my exposure value was 0/2 - what does that mean?) I didn't change my settings from shooting the basketball games earlier - custom white balance, AI Servo autofocus, continuous drive

You can just see where the candle was on the left side. There was a present in front of the candle so that the light bounced back on the scene. I was really suprised at how much difference that made.

Edit: I was able to post to the gallery. I included a couple of starting point photos from last year and the year before. I can't wait to see everyone's photos! I would like to have a nice flame somehow. I'm not sure how to achieve that, though.

Oh Marcy both of those photos are gorgeous, thanks for sharing. We had our Winter Solstice celebration last night. We lit up the house with candles and had our usual Chinese feast, and then let the kids open a gift (Dragonology, the board game). Here are photos of the celebration, and yes, Heather, it was nice to have a Friday night this year! I am still learning how to use my camera, but the best luck I had was setting the camera down on a surface for stability and using the aperture priority setting. I wish that darn soy sauce bottle wasn't in the middle picture though, LOL!

Nice photos everyone... things to keep in mind... just because you have a lens that goes to f2 or f2.8 - the best photos typically do not come from those apertures... Most good quality 2.8 lenses get the best results at f4 or f5.6.. some even go as high as f8! By using f-stops in that range, the sharpest results can be achieved.

acheese89: I like the top photo.. but it could use a little sharpening to overcome the blur.. either that or you might add some addition guass blur to the edges to bring more focus to the center candles.

Marcy: Again, nice photo but I would touch up the house in the foreground to add some additional light to it - it is kind of dark and hard to make out any details in the building. A big of dodging or bringing up the overall exposure by +1 and then masking out the background would do wonders.

Great Solstice pictures. Here is my submission. This was shot at 0.5s at f/4 at ISO 200 with the lens set at 38mm.
