Laurel, i just learned to do it that way about a month ago
before that I always turned it to black and white and tediously hand colored it with a brush tool...lol
now i use multiple layers, mute colors, erase, blur, add photo filters....lol wish someone like you would have been around to suggest layers to me in the past :P

Here's a LO I previously did of my Grandson. I duplicated the photo - changed it to B&W and then erased the part of the top photo that I wanted the color to show through. Not sure if it was right - but worked me for at the time. Blue Jeans

There is mine...probably one of a couple to come (i am going to post one i did like 2 yrs ago...lol before i learned to do it an easier way :P)....
