Have an automatic camera?
I just have an automatic Point and Shoot camera, as much as I would love to have a digital SLR! So the photo challenges for me are extra challenging sometimes.. but I thought I would share what I learned with this one so that other might try it! With an automatic camera the light meter automatically tries to get rid of shadows and compensate exposure by filling in with flash. First thing you can do to keep shadows is turn off your flash. The next thing to do is make sure your spot meter is on the brightest part of the pic. This is usually the very center of your frame. You can always crop to frame better in your photo editor if the framing isn't exactly what you want. This should give you a more dramatic lighting and keep the shadows!
