PHOTO TECHNIQUE CHALLENGE (Backlight)

When I was a teenager my mom gave me a piece of photography advise that she had heard somewhere and I am sure a lot of you have probably heard it as well and that is to always have your back to the light when you are taking photos. Well, that is good advise in some situations but for this months technique we are going to be concentrating on backlight and how it effects your photos. Backlight is simply to have the light illuminate your subject from the back (the photographer should be facing the light). The key to creating a really cool dramatic backlight effect is to try this technique either in the early morning hours or in the early evening when the sun is not directly overhead.
You can find excellent examples of this in Brian Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" which is where I got my ideas from. Just remember to use natural light and no flash. Have fun and see what kind of results you can get with backlight!!

Leewinz, I just bought my first serious digital camera. I am hopelessly inept. In fact, I am phobic. I never even looked at these challenges because I just didn't want to know! But I have vowed to read these posts and look at the pics until I am no longer filled with dread. I don't know an f-stop from a bus stop but I have great hopes for this thread. Having learned so much from all the others, there is no way I can't learn from here!

I just read this challenge and knew I had a photo to share for this challenge! I was taking pics of my boys two days ago and noticed the sun was leaving a really neat lighting effect when I angled the camera a certain way. I had fun taking these pics. Looking for creative criticism....I know some of the sun rays sort of washed him out....not sure if I completely got a perfect shot.
