ACDSee Help!

All -

So I posted yesterday about considering throwing PSE Organizer out the window... which I did this morning. A few weeks ago I installed the trial version and played with it a bit.

Now when I look at the files within ACDSee only a fraction of my scrap files are detected. It is not that they are in some strange format or anything.... Kits, pages, etc., but sees all of my photos in a totally different file. It recognizes folders, and in some even shows a thumbnail in the folder, but as soon as I click through it does not detect any real files.

I think I may have stopped the system from fully sync-ing the first time since I did not know if I was going to purchase or not?? I don't know. Is there a way to get the system to resync with the hard drive? Or is there anything else I can try. I thought I'd try you guys first since Tech Support would probably think I was nuts. Scrapbook files?!

Thanks Nic.

hmm.. don't worry about them being scrapbook files.. in reality, they are simply JPGS or PNGS or TTF's, etc.. when you say "sees my photos in a totally different file".. what do you mean? What format are the files in.. JPG or RAW?

Worst case scenario, I would just perform a rescan and be sure to set it to include all file types it can recognize...

Pesto -

Thanks for posting back. Looking at what you wrote... caused a lightbulb to go off. I did eventually find the right section to rescan my db. It was the 'catalog' function. Why exactly it would be called a catalog is beyond me. Usually I don't have issues using software out right out of the box, but this one got me. I think I remember stopping the initial cataloging, so that if probably what happened to cause this.

Anyway thanks again for posting. I knew there was a way to rescan or initiate it & you confirmed it.

If you have problems, send me an email

connie@digiscrapinfo.com and I can help.

Interrupting the cataloging of the database can cause issues. It's an easy fix though

Glad to help.... Its called a catalog because you are basically building a database with info and thumbnails - some call them catalogs, others call them albums, etc.

Just remember.. you want to be sure anything you add to the catalog is also filed back into the metadata in your images... a step that many users do not do and learn to regret later. Ratings, keywords, IPTC info, etc should all be written back to your JPGS or Sidecard files - this will ensure you can easily recreate the catalog from your backup should your PC crash and (more importantly), that you can create a new catalog with NEW software should you want to move to the latest and greatest down the road... Good Luck!

Pesto, for someone using ACDSee and PS how do you suggest they go about writing the info back to their jpegs?

Well.. for ACDSee.. you can only do it for JPG's (and possibly RAW with the DCRAW plugin) but not for pngs, etc... and, there doesn't appear to be an easy way to convert your category entries into keywords which would be stored in the IPTC..

So, I would suggest at the least, you add all your category info into the keywords section using the batch set info utility... but even this will only be good for jpg's... I'll need to look into a 3rd party tool to help with this... this is why I like tools that write directly to the IPTC data for images (or use a sidecar file for things like NEF and PNG)... stay tuned.
