Just need to sound off

OK, I just have to share my frustration. I made my dad a calendar for Christmas using photos that were displayed at a family reunion earlier this year. He loved it and so he showed his sister. She decided she would like one and one for all her kids too.

How rude is that? That's like saying, "Gee I love that sweater you got your brother, can you get me one too? Oh yeah, and one for all my kids as well." I guess it makes me mad because it was something special from me to my dad, not meant for others.

I would maybe think about making some more and selling them to her, but I used others' copyrighted elements and brushes in them, so it's out of the question. I don't really want to anyway. It's a lot of work, time, ink, paper, etc.

Well, thanks for listening!

Sorry for your frustration! Maybe just offer her the chance to pay for copies of the prints and be done with it. It did take me a lot of time and ink to print mine out, so I can understand where you are coming from!

It should be fine for her to pay you for the costs of reproducing the calendars. It's only if you were making money from the designs that there might be copyright issues. But you could also tell her that it's a "one of a kind, limited edition."

On the other hand, you should also feel very flattered by her reaction. MNy hand-created gifts are snubbed by the reciever. Congrats on making such a big impression on your family!

How about giving her the files on a CD as high res jpg and let her print her own. She may not realize how expensive it can be. Just a thought.

Thanks

Thanks for the new perspective, it's just what I needed. Give it a couple of hours and it all just seems silly. I think I'll try the color copies since I don't know if she'd be able to print them off herself.

Thanks again everyone for your replies!

I'd give it to her on a CD too!

I Know how you feel...

The same thing happened to me...so i very nicely exsplained that the calender i made was special just for my Sister, but if they wanted one i would gladly given them the Calender templates without the picts...then they could add thier own picts..Sometimes family members put demands on others because they feel they can get away with it, those same people wouldn't ask a total stranger do all that work for nothing. Good luck.

I vote for the "let her print her own" option. Just the time spent in printing or finding someplace to have them printed will begin to make her have an appreciation for all of your hard work. Or maybe she could hire you to create a custom calendar for her family, and them she could still have a true value attached for your work.

And there's the expense she'll encounter in getting her own printed... Yikes...
