yes.. 1 GB will make your system much faster than 512.. especially for photoshop. Just a side note: currently 2GB is the maximum amount of memory that Adobe products will fully utilize.. so.. if you would imagine expanding beyond this.. save your money and buy something else instead!

The Hard Drive speed is a severly underrated area of most PC's.. Most Dell/HP/Best Buy type systems might come with a 120GB drive.. but they are 5400RPM. Moving up to a 7200 RPM or even better.. SATA drive will pay huge dividends.. Primarly, loading things will be super fast. Secondly, when your PC starts using virtual memory.. (and adobe uses it alot.. espeially on 512MB systems and filters), your system will function much faster. I think this is one area that is often overlooked when people buy computers and really is the most important!

So.. 1MB of memory and a 7200 or SATA drive will pay huge dividends.. even on a 1.7 Ghz PC.. It should be one of the first things you will want to upgrade!

My computer is increasingly frustrating to me. It's extremely picky about what type of RAM it will recognize. It's only 4 years old and only takes SD RAM... if I'd known anything about it when we bought it, I would've gone with something that doesn't take the most expensive RAM out there, that's for sure! Right now we've got 384mb. The max the computer will recognize is 512, but so far we haven't been able to find another stick of 256 that will work with our current 256... and cash flow hasn't allowed for the $200+ it'll cost to just go with a stick of 512. *sigh*

I recently had a last-minute computer issue, and had some photo work I needed to have done by the weekend (for a paying customer), so I skipped over to my SILs to work on her computer... with 1Gig of RAM... oh Heaven! What I wouldn't give! LOL

Wow--I love my laptop, and I'm still jealous of some of your systems! I have a P4 2.8 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM. My computer does well running Photo Impact and filters. The only time the speed gets frustrating is when I have 2 LOs open, especially since I'm usually online at the same time. Of course I'd love faster, but my next purchase has to be an external hard drive. Speaking of hard drives, I read something else about hard drives that affects their speed. If your HD is more than half full, it will run more slowly because it can't make a mirror image of itself, which would boost the speed. I know that as my HD has filled up, I've noticed a slowing.

I bought 512 and then upgraded to 1meg. At first I thought I was in heaven. Now I have changed over from PSP to PS, I am seriously considering moving up to 2meg. I have a Pentium 4, 7200, 2.53MHz. It is already two years old but I don't think I will trade it in until I try another meg of ram first. After a few initial months of tweaking, now have it the way I want it and just can't face going through it all again!

Talk about your poor relation... I have 96 acutal MB of RAM. The computer has 128, but it uses part of that for the video card. I'm planning to upgrade by the middle of Feb., but now I'm just thinking I need a new computer, huh? Dell had one that I could get 512 MB... that would be flying compared to what I have, huh?

I actually digi-scrap fairly well on my current computer and will upgrade the RAM on it regardless so that the kids can play their computer games on it (newest versions of their favorite games require 256 RAM). I've only had trouble with 1 designer's stuff not opening on my computer. I guess it's slower, but since I've never had the fast stuff, I don't miss it.

Here's a cool link that can tell you how many slots you have and how much memory is in each- and also the maximum amount that your computer can have:
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp?CPE...cid=1%2DAA8VL8

I now have:
768MB of a possible 2048MB

Just got 256 extra at Christmas
Very happy that I could have 2 MB! Wishful thinking!
