So, what's the difference between an overlay layer and a normal layer with reduced opacity?

Nice!! The difference really is personal preference. I find the overlay provides a sharper image but that's the neat thing with PS - There are so many options! Glad you liked the tutorial!

here is the explanation of what overlay is

Overlay multiplies the light colors and screens the dark colors.

reducing the opactiy does just that. sometimes it looks the same but not always


oh just an little note how funny that anna was answering this while I was getting the links LOL and she's right personal preference
