reinstalling windows XP

I need a computer geek's help. My desktop has been behaving a little strangely lately. First it doesn't want to load windows, and I get a message about starting in safe-mode. Sometimes, it locks up and all I can see is my wallpaper - no start menu, no task bar, no icons. And I have to restart it. Of course, I started to worry and went right in and backed-up all my layouts and photos. So that's done . . .

After some research, it seems as though the installation of windows may be corrupt and I may need to reinstall or repair it. Can someone direct me to a good tutorial on how to do this?

first question - do you have the original XP disk? Also be sure you have EVERYTHING backed up before you do anything (including making sure you note which programs you have installed, etc. and their license keys handy) because if you do a repair with your disk it may not be able to repair it and may only prompt you to restore the machine to it's original - which would basically be reformatting and wiping the entire drive out and starting it over again like you just bought it

I second Amy. I woudl also make note of anything that you've got inside PS (filters, etc), since you'll have to put them back too. I just had to do this and it truly sucked. Good luck and I hope it's a simple process for you.

Ugh! you guys are making me nervous. I wonder if I should make DH do it. If I mess up, I will NEVER hear the end of it.

As far as the files, most of the most important ones are his, since I now work primarily off my laptop, but I'd still rather not lose the data I have on there. I could honestly not care less about what he has on there, but like I said I'd never hear the end of it. LOL.

I have no idea what is going on with my internet explorer. When I go to the gallery and look at a layout when I want to continue I get a message saying internet explorer cannot access the page and has to close. I am getting somewhat frustrated as I am trying to do comments in the gallery and have to keep starting over. UGH.

we keep our operating system on a separate drive from where all the programs and data are. Everything is partitioned, so when dh does do a reinstall of windows, we don't have to reinstall programs too or lose any data. Unfortunately, that's about all I can tell you about it all, as that is dh's "job" hehe
