Kids in the Workplace

I have a co-worker with a 5 yr old who is now bring in her daughter almost daily into the office. After an hour she is become very disruptive - mainly because she sits across from and wants one of the secretaries to play with her. I have to read and understand technical specs and its too noisy for me! I've been wearing ear plugs and when there was a fire drill, I didn't hear it!

This co-worker is already angry because I asked her to lower her speaker phone. She'll probably have a heart attack if she's told to not bring her child every day for the summer but if I can't concentrate at work, I have to finish the work at home which is not fair to me (especially if it interferes with my scrapping time)!

How should I best approach this since everyone thinks the child is "an angel" and working from home is not an option unless its on my own time?

Thank you.

Hmmm, this is a sticky situation. I don't know if I would approach her or your boss first. Probably her, unless you know it will cause hell, then I'd go to the boss and let him/her know that it is impossible for you to concentrate and do your job with this co-workers child there. She either needs to find a babysitter, or she needs to stay home and do her work there.

Good luck!

Do others in your office feel as you do? Or does everyone feel that this child is really not disrupting anything? Do you have a good working relationship with the mother? I would think if you do that you would be able to talk with her and explain that it is really hard to get your work done because the child is talking or disrupting your work. Or- maybe she doesn't care and if that is the case- go to the boss. I would guess that she is bringing her because she doesn't have another daycare option. But- if you are having to do your work at home since you can't get it done at work- then I would tell her she needs to be the one to work at home. Is there a private office she can move into for a short while until the child goes back to school? That way she can close the door with the kid inside!! I don't know- just trying to think of options. Sticky situation if you and the mom are friends.

Thank you for your suggestions, Trisha & Sherry. I am in a very sticky situation and I hate being a complainer but its not fair that I have to give up my personal time to do work. If I did not have such a stressful job, it would be easier to ignore all the noise.

(((((((((hugs)))))))) Betty! What a pain to have to deal with this! I would definitely talk to your boss. Obviouisly it would be great if she could work from home if it's possible.

I'm thinking that maybe your coworkers aren't bothered as much because they don't have as much work to do as you LOL!

I also think that this is totally unfair to a 5 year old to be cooped up all day long in the summer!

I'll say a prayer for you right now.

I would ask the boss if there is a different place you can use for the summer that you know the child is great and don't bother anyone else but you have a hard time working with her around. I wouldn't complain about her just ask if I could work at a different desk when the child is there.

When my hubby has to take our girls to work we pack the videos the leapads board games. all kinds of fun things for them to do. Then they go into the conference room ( right across the hall from hubby's office ) with a baby monitor for an adventure day as they call it. I have on occasion even sent a sheet so that they can turn the conference table into a hut. But everything totally depends on the work environment. If they have customers coming into the office that day the kids would be no where near the place. Dose she bring things for her dd to do? What is your company policy on bringing children to work? I feel for you and hope you get it all worked out
