I'm so sick...

I just had to vent! My external Lacie hard drive just crashed. I was in the middle of transfering data from my old computer to transfer to my new computer. I have no back up because it was just going to be an hour or so while I hooked up the new computer! I'm in tears. Not only did I lose all my business records, I lost all my LOs pictures. kits I've made and everything I had downloaded! I just can't believe I did this.

Retoration was quote, if they can recovery anything, at up to $7900. If I'm willing to wait two weeks or more maybe ONLY $4900.

Ouch! I have a call into my insurance agent. I'm not sure if the business records are covered in our policy. Anyway not much I can do but cry for now...

Ouch, so sorry!!! I am a little leary now of depending completely on an external hard drive not only because of what happened to you but because of what I was reading on the internet. I mean what is the point of having an external hard drive as back up for precious files if the fail rate seems to be so high. I don't feel any safer now then I did before the hard drive so I plan on backing up to CDs pretty quickly. I feel cheated because I bought an external just so I could avoid that problem and now I don't trust it as far as I can throw it.

What brand did you have your files on? I actually bought a Maxtor OneTouchII after talking to a few people but I wish I had gone online. My problem was I was in a hurry to buy so I could stick it in my suitcase before I came back to Italy and where I was for most of my U.S. trip is pretty rural - - not many shopping choices so my options were limited by area and my timeframe - - now I can just kick myself in the butt!!

Good luck - - hope you are able to figure out a better, cheaper way soon!

Ok, I don't know if this is just b/c I have a Mac or just b/c my computer knowledge is deficient, but I don't understand why your stuff is not still on your original computer? Regardless of my level of understanding, I am SO SORRY! Hope somehow you are able to get it all, or at the very least some, back and have it covered by your insurance.

ccubed, I wouldn't right off external hard drives just yet. I have been using them for years without problems, they are a very integral part of my backup program, which I have posted multiple times.

Mine was a LaCie D2 Big Disk 500GB external drive. I had what the tech called a head crash and it had to be caused by a power surge or cut off of power. But it was plugged into a surge protector??? It's my own fault for not having an additional backup, but I was cutting corners. The data recovery place has a 90% recovery rate, but I am hoping I can get some of that money back from insurance or the surge manufacturer. Meanwhile, I'm trying not to panic. I've already cried my eyes out. So now I just want to do something about it, but will have to wait until tomorrow to figure out what and make some contacts.

Interestingly the tech from LaCie told me all hard drives fail at some point and there is no way to determine when that will happen. That certianly didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy more like screaming at him, but I didn't.

My new computer has two drives that mirror write all the data, so I should have a back-up as soon as I save data, but I am still going to back up onto the replaced LaCie drive, just in case!!! That means it should be on 3 drives. That's got to be good enough...I hope.

Reason it is not on the computer is I deleted the files as I am giving the computer away. See it is my fault. I was trying to save time and it was only going to be until I set up the new computer!

Colleen- I am sooooo sorry that this happened to you! I'll say a prayer that everything will be recovered AND covered under some policy. {{{hugs}}}
