We've had a horrible night

My youngest, Helena (5 years old) had an awful accident tonight. She was doing her karate moves (she just pretends, she has no idea what she's doing) and she fell and smashed the side of her head against our TV cabinet. Apparently her ear caught the hinge. Picture taking a pair of scissors and slicing the top of your ear almost off - that's what happened. The top of her ear was almost completely severed. She was screaming hysterically at the beginning, while we drove to Urgent Care. Then she calmed down but Urgent Care said we needed to go to the emergency room at the hospital to see a plastic surgeon.

We went to the ER and several hours later, she was put under sedation and a plastic surgeon sutured her ear - 20 stitches.

She was such a little trooper - she is so brave sometimes, I just can't get over it. She is going to be fine.

I've done broken bones before but never blood and stitches. And I'm sure in the whole scheme of things, this is probably pretty minor, but I can't help it ... I'm shaking and I feel like I'm going to vomit. Countless times I have yelled at my kids, telling them to stop horsing around, etc. They're always saying I yell too much. I didn't yell this time. The one time I don't yell and this is what happens. I feel like if I had just yelled or done something differently, this wouldn't have happened.

I just feel sick to my stomach. I don't even know why I'm posting now ... I think I just needed to get it out.

Sor sorry! Hope she will feel better tomorrow, sweet thing. It is hard when they are in pain!
YOU go take a break, I know how draining the ER is so have a glass of wine or take a bubble bath and get some sleep. PS don't blame yourself either!!

Oh Andy-
I'm so sorry to hear about your little one's accident! Poor thing must've been in so much pain! It feels so helpless when these things happen. Thank God she's ok- it could've been a lot worse!

I know what you mean about yelling. My oldest (who's 4 now) was 2 when he was playing with my mom's glass candy dish. He was clanging the lid to the bowl and I didn't yell *that* time. Well it broke and then he must have hit his leg with it somehow. He didn't cry until I saw the big cut in his blanket pj's. My heart sunk. With all of the blood it looked worse than what it was. He has a big scar now- to remind him to be careful.

{{{hugs}}} to you. It happens to all of us- so try not to feel bad. Just makes us appreciate them a little more.

Andy, I am so sorry, both for Helena and you and your family. These things take a tragic toll. i saw your post and can relate to your "mother-to-a-5-year-old-who-knows-karate" story too well. I just had to share this layout I did about a month ago of my 5 year old and what he did while we were hours away from a hospital out camping! http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...00&ppuser=7297 He knew he could fly and proved it to everyone on the cement paver in the parking spot. I just wanted to pass on encouragement and to tell you, she will get better and that it could have been worse (that's what everyone kept telling me)! It's hard to see your baby hurt!!

Oh goodness--what an eventful evening! Andy, I pray Miss Helena heals well, and that you all get some rest. And don't be blamin' yourself for what happened--it maybe would have happened whether you yelled or not! Give each other a great big hug--it'll only help you both
