Oh Andy...I just saw this post, what an experience and I feel for both of you!!
I just wanted to add that my oldest son (who was 8) got the very top of his ear cut off while, down into the cartilege, getting his hair cut at a Regis Salon. I had just shut off the video camera as my daughter was also getting her first hair cut. When I heard him scream and watched the lady run away from him. He was bleeding so badly the shoulder of his shirt was soaking with blood.
Anyway in the emergency room they had to cauterize it as that part of his ear was gone!!
He ended up with a raised scar about the tip of a pinky finger pad on top off his ear. It took about 2-3 years for it to look normal and for the redness to leave. But as a boy with very short military hair it showed and he was very bothered by it.
So I'm hoping you both recover from this and yes it happens to every mother and kid I know!!

Thank you so much, everyone. It is incredible the amount of support this board brings. All of your encouragement and similar stories have made me feel so much better. I was very emotional when I posted yesterday and I'm still emotional today - I know that we will all laugh about this down the road - I just have to get that horrible vision out of my head.

Helena is doing find today ... I'm a little worried that she doesn't seem to remember the incident - she says she hurt her head on the tv stand but I think she is merely repeating what she's been hearing. And, she thought it was the stereo equipment holder that she fell against. So, maybe it's a blessing that she doesn't remember it.

She's on her antibiotic and other than some pain when she eats, she says she's feeling OK.

Thank you again, everyone. I sincerely appreciate your support.

My heart goes out to you! My kids are older now, but those childhood tramas live as fresh in my mind as if they were yesterday. The adrenaline kicks in and you amaze yourself with handling the emergency, then when it's over you feel so weak. I remember disctinctly the day my youngest fell and hit her forhead, resulting in a deep and wicked gash. I found myself calmly saying, "Honey, hold this towel to your head and try not to bleed on mommy's car". LOL! We made it through, and she drew a picture for the emergency room aid, who wound up using it on his medical school application.

Sounds like you need some tender care for yourself now, so go treat yourself special for awhile!

I'm glad that your daughter is feeling better, and it's probably just as well that she doesn't remember quite what happened. We've all got stories like yours... my oldest (8) had to have stitches this spring when the neighbor he was playing with decided that they should play a game of "rock dodgeball" and AJ was the target! Kids just don't always make great choices, much as we try to teach them!
