Talk to me like I'm an idiot..

could somebody here possibly explain TiVo to me? I've heard it mentioned in a few layouts/online forums, and I checked the site and it seems it is available in the UK, but the site didnt' answer my question at all. What the heck is it and is it worth me purchasing it, considering the only channel I ever watch is Cbeebies (and occasionally whatever the mean-agers are watching)

AH right up my alley I heart my Tivo!
In a nutshell:
It is a digital video recorder that we use with satellite/Direct TV (I think you can use it with reg cable but not sure), you can rewind live tv, record shows like on a VCR but way cooler.
There are many search options, recording options and depending on the hd of the recorder it holds a ton of shows.
I must say the only reason we have it is the DH neeeeeded it for football season.

I absolutely LOVE my TIVO!!!!

I don't remember how I lived without it... lol and we've only had ours a few months. It is great you can watch your shows whenever you want at your convenience not PRIMEtime TV times and you can skip the commercials so easy... Saves you so much time that is valuable for other things like Scrapbooking. There's usually at least 15 mins saved on a 1 hour show when you eliminate the commercials.

And by the way, it does work with Cable, we have Comcast here... but unlike with satellite and Direct TV, you can't get the dual dvr unit... so, you have to buy 2 units if you have 2 shows that come on at the same time that you want to record. It's only downfall at that point is you have to manually set up which TIVO records which show, since they don't communicate with each other... my only complaint about the programming, though. Once you figure it out and set up the season passes and priorities on each individual machine your good to go though.

I also suggest the Lifetime membership for $299 if you have it up front. Everyone I know that has a TIVO has it it for a few years(2 or more) and at $12.95 plus tax at the monthly rate, in 2 years your using it for free basically... If you get a second one, I'd suggest the monthly rate since it's only around $6 for each additional TIVO... and I don't know yet if they'll last 4 years...

Just my 2 cents but I'd never give up my TIVO, it's so awesome!!! By the way,, they have a new one out now that will actually convert your programs/movies and burn to a DVD so you can take the movies with you and watch elsewhere or later in time. If this technology had been out when we bought ours... we would've paid the extra for it... As it is now, it's much more complicated to convert it - you have to send it to your computer, a conversion process, and then use a DVD burner on your PC to burn it. It would be awesome just to hit a button and tell the TIVO to do it for you and walk away come back 2 hours later and whola' DVD movie done.

Sorry so long!

Wow, so it just stores the recordings in the box thingy-me-bob? That sounds like a great idea...and a money saver too, in the long run. I'll have to wait for the DVD burner edition to come out over here! Thanks girls.
