How to print?? jpeg vs. png??

I create my layout and save it in .png format. However, when I print my layout, am I supposed to print out the .png version? Or am I supposed to do a "save as" and save a .jpeg version of it for printing? What's the difference between printing a .png layout and a .jpeg layout?

png vs. jpg

You most likely would want to print the .png file. PNG is a "lossless" format. What that means is that every time you open and/or print that file it will be EXACTLY the same. JPG is a compression formula, and it is considered to be "lossy"... meaning even if you save it with as little compression as possible, there will be some loss. Also, every time you open/print it, it will be slightly different.

Keep in mind, you may not be able to tell the difference, so you may want to do some experimentation to see what works best for you.

ok just need to add a correction so people dont' get all scared here

everytime you open a jpg it does NOT Lose anything. it's only when you work on that jpg file and save it again if you keep saving a jpg that is where it loses information or artifacts come in. if you never will resave it then it doesn't matter and printing a jpg is no different than printing a png

OK - so let me just make sure I understand. I can either print out the .png version or print out a .jpeg version that I have done NO editing to - there will be no difference in the quality of printing? If this is true, then should I just always print out my .png versions as there's really no reason for me to save my layout in .jpeg format?

If you save everything as png ( i assume that you must be using a program that supports png as layers such as fireworks) then there is no need to save it as a jpg also other than when you save your small previews for posting on websites but for printing you can just print your png files if that is the native format you are already saving in
